The King has asked of his son so goodA
Why art thou hushed and heavy of moodB
O fair it is to ride abroadC
Thou playest not and thou laughest notD
All thy good game is clean forgotD
-
Sit thou beside me father dearE
And the tale of my sorrow shalt thou hearF
-
Thou sendedst me unto a far off landG
And gavest me into a good Earl's handG
-
Now had this good Earl daughters sevenH
The fairest of maidens under heavenH
-
One brought me my meat when I should dineI
One cut and sewed my raiment fineI
-
One washed and combed my yellow hairJ
And one I fell to loving thereJ
-
Befell it on so fair a dayK
We minded us to sport and playK
-
Down in a dale my horse bound IL
Bound on my saddle speedilyM
-
Bright red she was as the flickering flameN
When to my saddle bow she cameN
-
Beside my saddle bow she stoodA
'To flee with thee to my heart were good '-
-
Kind was my horse and good to aidO
My love upon his back I laidO
-
We gat us from the garth awayK
And none was ware of us that dayK
-
But as we rode along the sandG
Behold a barge lay by the landG
-
So in that boat did we departP
And rowed away right glad at heartP
-
When we came to the dark wood and the shadeO
To raise the tent my true love badeO
-
Three sons my true love bore me thereJ
And syne she died who was so dearE
-
A grave I wrought her with my swordQ
With my fair shield the mould I pouredQ
-
First in the mould I laid my loveR
Then all my sons her breast aboveR
-
And I without must lie aloneS
So from the place I gat me goneT
-
No man now shall stand on his feetU
To love that love to woo that sweetU
O fair it is to ride abroadC
