Of silk my gear was shapenA
Scarlet they did on meB
Then to the sea strand was I borneA
And laid in a bark of the seaB
O well were I from the World awayC
-
Befell it there I might not drownA
For God to me was goodD
The billows bare me up a landE
Where grew the fair green woodD
O well were I from the World awayC
-
There came a Knight a ridingF
With three swains along the wayC
And he took me up the little oneA
On the sea sand as I layC
O well were I from the World awayC
-
He took me up and bare me homeG
To the house that was his ownA
And there bode I so long with himH
That I was his love aloneA
O well were I from the World awayC
-
But the very first night we lay abedI
Befell his sorrow and harmJ
That thither came the King's ill menA
And slew him on mine armJ
O well were I from the World awayC
-
There slew they Adalbright the KingF
Two of his swains slew theyC
But the third sailed swiftly from the landE
Sithence I saw him never a dayC
O well were I from the World awayC
-
O wavering hope of this world's blissK
How shall men trow in theeB
My Grove of Gems is gone awayC
For mine eyes no more to seeB
O well were I from the World awayC
-
Each hour the while my life shall lastL
Remembereth him aloneA
Such heavy sorrow have I gotM
From our meeting long agoneA
O well were I from the World awayC
-
O early in the morning tideN
Men cry Christine the fairO
Art thou well content with that true loveP
Thou sittest loving thereO
O well were I from the World awayC
-
Ah yea so well I love himH
And so dear my love shall beB
That the very God of Heaven aloftQ
Worshippeth him and meB
O well were I from the World awayC
-
Ah all the red gold I have gotM
Well would I give to dayC
Only for this and nothing elseR
From the world to win awayC
O well were I from the World awayC
-
Nay midst all folk upon the earthS
Keep thou thy ruddy goldT
And love withal the mighty lordU
That wedded thee of oldT
O well were I from the World awayC
