The Earthly Paradise: Apology Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDD EFEFFDD GHGIHDD JKJKKKK ALALLKK MINIIKK

Of Heaven or Hell I have no power to singA
I cannot ease the burden of your fearsB
Or make quick coming death a little thingA
Or bring again the pleasure of past yearsB
Nor for my words shall ye forget your tearsC
Or hope again for aught that I can sayD
The idle singer of an empty dayD
-
But rather when aweary of your mirthE
From full hearts still unsatisfied ye sighF
And feeling kindly unto all the earthE
Grudge every minute as it passes byF
Made the more mindful that the sweet days dieF
Remember me a little then I prayD
The idle singer of an empty dayD
-
The heavy trouble the bewildering careG
That weighs us down who live and earn our breadH
These idle verses have no power to bearG
So let em sing of names remember e dI
Because they living not can ne'er be deadH
Or long time take their memory quite awayD
From us poor singers of an empty dayD
-
Dreamer of dreams born out of my due timeJ
Why should I strive to set the crooked straightK
Let it suffice me that my murmuring rhymeJ
Beats with light wing against the ivory gateK
Telling a tale not too importunateK
To those who in the sleepy region stayK
Lulled by the singer of an empty dayK
-
Folk say a wizard to a northern kingA
At Christmas tide such wondrous things did showL
That through one window men beheld the springA
And through another saw the summer glowL
And through a third the fruited vines a rowL
While still unheard but in its wonted wayK
Piped the drear wind of that December dayK
-
So with this Earthly Paradise it isM
If ye will read aright and pardon meI
Who strive to build a shadowy isle of blissN
Midmost the beating of the steely seaI
Where tossed about all hearts of men must beI
Whose ravening monsters mighty men shall slayK
Not the poor singer of an empty dayK
