Come hither lads and hearkenA
for a tale there is to tellB
Of the wonderful days a coming when allC
shall be better than wellB
-
And the tale shall be told of a countryD
a land in the midst of the seaD
And folk shall call it EnglandE
in the days that are going to beD
-
There more than one in a thousandE
in the days that are yet to comeF
Shall have some hope of the morrowG
some joy of the ancient homeH
-
For then laugh not but listenA
to this strange tale of mineA
All folk that are in EnglandE
shall be better lodged than swineA
-
Then a man shall work and bethink himI
and rejoice in the deeds of his handJ
Nor yet come home in the evenA
too faint and weary to standJ
-
Men in that time a comingK
shall work and have no fearL
For to morrow s lack of earningK
and the hunger wolf anearL
-
I tell you this for a wonderL
that no man then shall be gladM
Of his fellow s fall and mishapN
to snatch at the work he hadM
-
For that which the worker winnethO
shall then be his indeedP
Nor shall half be reaped for nothingK
by him that sowed no seedP
-
O strange new wonderful justiceQ
But for whom shall we gather the gainA
For ourselves and for each of our fellowsR
and no hand shall labour in vainA
-
Then all Mine and all Thine shall be OursS
and no more shall any man craveT
For riches that serve for nothingK
but to fetter a friend for a slaveT
-
And what wealth then shall be left usQ
when none shall gather goldU
To buy his friend in the marketV
and pinch and pine the soldU
-
Nay what save the lovely cityD
and the little house on the hillW
And the wastes and the woodland beautyD
and the happy fields we tillW
-
And the homes of ancient storiesX
the tombs of the mighty deadY
And the wise men seeking out marvelsZ
and the poet s teeming headY
-
And the painter s hand of wonderL
and the marvellous fiddle bowA2
And the banded choirs of musicB2
all those that do and knowG
-
For all these shall be ours and all men sC2
nor shall any lack a shareL
Of the toil and the gain of livingK
in the days when the world grows fairL
-
Ah such are the days that shall beD
But what are the deeds of to dayD2
-
In the days of the years we dwell inA
that wear our lives awayD2
Why then and for what are we waitingK
There are three words to speakE2
WE WILL IT and what is the foemanA
but the dream strong wakened and weakE2
-
O why and for what are we waitingK
while our brothers droop and dieF2
And on every wind of the heavensG2
a wasted life goes byF2
-
How long shall they reproach usQ
where crowd on crowd they dwellB
Poor ghosts of the wicked cityD
the gold crushed hungry hellB
-
Through squalid life they labouredD
in sordid grief they diedD
Those sons of a mighty motherL
those props of England s prideD
-
They are gone there is none can undo itD
nor save our souls from the curseH2
But many a million comethO
and shall they be better or worseH2
-
It is we must answer and hastenA
and open wide the doorL
For the rich man s hurrying terrorL
and the slow foot hope of the poorL
-
Yea the voiceless wrath of the wretchedD
and their unlearned discontentD
We must give it voice and wisdomF
till the waiting tide be spentD
-
Come then since all things call usQ
the living and the deadD
And o er the weltering tangleI2
a glimmering light is shedD
-
Come then let us cast off foolingK
and put by ease and restD
For the Cause alone is worthyD
till the good days bring the bestD
-
Come join in the only battleI2
wherein no man can failJ2
Where whoso fadeth and diethD
yet his deed shall still prevailJ2
-
Ah come cast off all foolingK
for this at least we knowA
That the Dawn and the Day is comingK
and forth the Banners goA
