Thick rise the spear shafts o'er the landA
That erst the harvest boreB
The sword is heavy in the handA
And we return no moreB
The light wind waves the Ruddy FoxC
Our banner of the warB
And ripples in the Running OxC
And we return no moreB
Across our stubble acres nowD
The teams go four and fourB
But out worn elders guide the ploughD
And we return no moreB
And now the women heavy eyedE
Turn through the open doorB
From gazing down the highway wideE
Where we return no moreB
The shadows of the fruited closeF
Dapple the feast hall floorB
There lie our dogs and dream and dozeG
And we return no moreB
Down from the minster tower to dayH
Fall the soft chimes of yoreB
Amidst the chattering jackdaws' playH
And we return no moreB
But underneath the streets are stillI
Noon and the market's o'erJ
Back go the goodwives o'er the hillI
For we return no moreB
What merchant to our gates shall comeK
What wise man bring us loreB
What abbot ride away to RomeL
Now we return no moreB
What mayor shall rule the hall we builtM
Whose scarlet sweep the floorB
What judge shall doom the robber's guiltM
Now we return no moreB
New houses in the streets shall riseN
Where builded we beforeB
Of other stone wrought otherwiseN
For we return no moreB
And crops shall cover field and hillI
Unlike what once they boreB
And all be done without our willI
Now we return no moreB
Look up the arrows streak the skyO
The horns of battle roarB
The long spears lower and draw nighO
And we return no moreB
Remember how beside the wainP
We spoke the word of warB
And sowed this harvest of the plainP
And we return no moreB
Lay spears about the Ruddy FoxC
The days of old are o'erJ
Heave sword about the Running OxC
For we return no moreB
