Hear a word a word in seasonA
for the day is drawing nighB
When the Cause shall call upon usC
some to live and some to dieB
-
He that dies shall not die lonelyD
many an one hath gone beforeE
He that lives shall bear no burdenA
heavier than the life they boreE
-
Nothing ancient is their storyD
e en but yesterday they bledF
Youngest they of earth s belovedG
last of all the valiant deadF
-
E en the tidings we are tellingH
was the tale they had to tellI
E en the hope that our hearts cherishJ
was the hope for which they fellI
-
In the grave where tyrants thrust themK
lies their labour and their painL
But undying from their sorrowM
springeth up the hope againN
-
Mourn not therefore nor lament itO
that the world outlives their lifeP
Voice and vision yet they give usC
making strong our hands for strifeP
-
Some had name and fame and honourM
learn d they were and wise and strongQ
Some were nameless poor unletteredO
weak in all but grief and wrongQ
-
Named and nameless all live in usC
one and all they lead us yetO
Every pain to count for nothingH
every sorrow to forgetO
-
Hearken how they cry O happyD
happy ye that ye were bornR
In the sad slow night s departingH
in the rising of the mornR
-
Fair the crown the Cause hath for youS
well to die or well to liveT
Through the battle through the tangleU
peace to gain or peace to giveV
-
Ah it may be Oft meseemethW
in the days that yet shall beD
When no slave of gold abidethW
twixt the breadth of sea to seaD
-
Oft when men and maids are merryD
ere the sunlight leaves the earthW
And they bless the day belovedO
all too short for all their mirthW
-
Some shall pause awhile and ponderM
on the bitter days of oldO
Ere the toil of strife and battleU
overthrew the curse of goldO
-
Then twixt lips of loved and loverM
solemn thoughts of us shall riseX
We who once were fools defeatedO
then shall be the brave and wiseX
-
There amidst the world new buildedO
shall our earthly deeds abideO
Though our names be all forgottenA
and the tale of how we diedO
-
Life or death then who shall heed itO
what we gain or what we loseY
Fair flies life amid the struggleU
and the Cause for each shall chooseY
-
Hear a word a word in seasonA
for the day is drawing nighB
When the Cause shall call upon usC
some to live and some to dieB
