TRANSLATED FROM THE DANISHA
-
Agnes went through the meadows a weepingB
Fowl are a singingB
There stood the hill man heed thereof keepingB
Agnes fair AgnesC
Come to the hill fair Agnes with meD
The reddest of gold will I give unto theeD
-
Twice went Agnes the hill round aboutE
Then wended within left the fair world withoutE
-
In the hillside bode Agnes three years thrice told o erF
For the green earth sithence fell she longing full soreG
-
There she sat and lullaby sang in her singingB
And she heard how the bells of England were ringingB
-
Agnes before her true love did standH
May I wend to the church of the English LandH
-
To England s Church well mayst thou be goneI
So that no hand thou lay the red gold uponJ
-
So that when thou art come the churchyard anearG
Thou cast not abroad thy golden hairG
-
So that when thou standest the church withinK
To thy mother on bench thou never winK
-
So that when thou hearest the high God s nameL
No knee unto earth thou bow to the sameL
-
Hand she laid on all gold that was thereG
And cast abroad her golden hairG
-
And when the church she stood withinK
To her mother on bench straight did she winK
-
And when she heard the high God s nameL
Knee unto earth she bowed to the sameL
-
When all the mass was sung to its endM
Home with her mother dear did she wendM
-
Come Agnes into the hillside to meD
For thy seven small sons greet sorely for theeD
-
Let them greet let them greet as they have will to doN
For never again will I hearken theretoN
-
Weird laid he on her sore sickness he wroughtN
Fowl are a singingB
That self same hour to death was she broughtN
Agnes fair AgnesC
