Kind Heaven will oft a lesson giveA
If mortals are inclined to learnB
To shew how simplest things that liveC
To kindness make a rich returnB
-
Tho' fiction speaks of dying notesD
Sung by the swan in death resign'dE
Is there a tribe that flies or floatsD
Of sense or feeling less refin'dE
-
Yet simple as this bird we deemF
My faithful ballad shall attestG
One Swan displayed on Thames's streamF
A feeling and a friendly breastG
-
Cecilia liv'd on Thames's bankH
A young and lovely married fairI
To creatures kind of every rankH
A favourite Swan had own'd her careI
-
Her lord a merchant frank and youngJ
By probity was known to thriveC
Their bliss enliven'd every tongueJ
They were the happiest pair aliveC
-
For to increase their nuptial joyK
And their domestic scene adornL
Heaven crown'd their blessings with a boyK
A finer boy was never bornL
-
His sportive life had only runM
To six short months how brief a dateN
When gay Cecilia's darling sonM
Was threaten'd with a deadly fateN
-
Her garden had a terrace fairI
Beneath it full the river flow'dO
There she enjoyed the evening airI
Her favourite Swan there proudly row'dO
-
The mother in her active armsP
To make her boy benignly mildQ
And nobly proof 'gainst all alarmsP
There oft would exercise her childQ
-
A boat house by the terrace sideR
Shelter'd a small and simple boatS
And sometimes half way o'er the tideR
Chain'd to its home it us'd to floatS
-
Here she her infant and her maidT
Sport with the Swan and give it breadU
While her gay boy of nought afraidT
With lively transport sees it fedU
-
'Tis June a sultry tempest wildQ
Impends Cecilia would retireV
But checks herself to teach her childQ
The vivid light'ning to admireV
-
Her noble mind delights to rearW
In early fortitude her boyK
That he the voice of God may hearX
With admiration's awful joyK
-
While to regain the vessel's shedU
Her maid an active pilot standsY
She to the music o'er her headU
Dances the child with dauntless handsY
-
But whirlwinds rise the vessel reel'dZ
Heaven the sweet parent is o'erthrownM
Her falling head she fails to shieldZ
Attentive to her child aloneM
-
Tis the tornado's ruthless blastA2
The mother stunn'd the babe it bearsB2
Far from her senseless frame aghastA2
The maid in speechless horror glaresB2
-
Yet swiftly to its proper shoreC2
The whirlwind now the vessel drivesD2
Where by the elemental roarC2
Alarm'd Cecilia's lord arrivesD2
-
Into the boat behold him boundE2
He lifts his lifeless wife uprightF2
She wakens to the thunder's soundE2
Her opening eyes regain the lightF2
-
Where is my child she faintly criesG2
Where is the child her lord rejoin'dH2
Poor heart struck Susan nought repliesG2
The child had vanished from her mindE
-
My child my child with terror's startI2
She shrieks in accents wild and shrillJ2
And at her agony of heartI2
The very tempest's self grew stillJ2
-
Say if you saw him sink she criedR
Wildly to Susan pale and wanM
When quick her roving eye descriedR
The tall neck of her favourite SwanM
-
My God my God 'tis thee I thankH
Exclaim'd the now exulting fairI
I see him wafted to the bankH
His cradle form'd by heavenly careI
-
She spoke and all who heard her cryK2
Now saw the babe divinely nurstR
The extatic sight from every eyeK2
Made tears of grateful transport burstR
-
Between her silvery arching wingsL2
The guardian bird had lodg'd the childR
And forward as her broad foot springsL2
At every stroke the infant smil'dR
-
And with a heaven implanted prideR
Superbly rowing now to landR
The brave bird has her charge deniedR
To all but to the mother's handR
-
Cecilia feeling now no painsM2
Leans o'er the boat's advancing endR
And aided by her lord reclaimsM2
The present of her feather'd friendR
-
Now with delight the rescued boyK
To her maternal bosom springsM2
The conscious Swan partakes their joyK
And claps her proud triumphant wingsM2
-
Cecilia beads to weep and prayN2
She weeps with joy no longer wanM
And still on this returning dayN2
Blesses the heaven directed SwanM
