Blest be the boy by virtue nurstA
Who knows not aught of fear's controulB
And keeps in peril's sudden burstA
The freedom of an active soulB
-
Such was a lively Tuscan boyC
Who lived the youthful Tasso's friendA
Friendship and verse his early joyC
And music form'd with love to blendA
-
Love had inspir'd his tender frameD
His years but two above elevenE
The sister of his friend his flameD
A lovely little light of HeavenE
-
Born in the same propitious yearF
Together nurst together taughtA
Each learn'd to hold the other dearF
In perfect unison of thoughtA
-
Their forms their talents and their talkG
Seem'd match'd by some angelic powersH
Ne'er grew upon a rose's stalkG
A sweeter pair of social flowersH
-
Fortunio was the stripling's nameD
Cornelia his affection's queenI
Both to all eyes where'er they cameD
Endear'd by their attractive mienI
-
For like a pair of fairy spritesH
Endued with soft therial graceH
Enrapt in musical delightsH
They hardly seem'd of mortal raceH
-
Often the youth in early mornJ
Awak'd a social sylvan fluteA
To notes as gay as Dian's hornJ
Or tender as Apollo's luteA
-
Then at his side his sovereign fairK
Appear'd the rising day to greetA
Uniting to his dulcet airK
Devotion's song divinely sweetA
-
A fund of joys that never wasteA
Nature to this sweet pair had givenE
Invention harmony and tasteA
And fancy brightest gift of HeavenE
-
In quest of many a new deviceH
Thro' pathless scenes they joy'd to roamL
Composing songs most wildly sweetA
Heard with parental pride at homeL
-
Delighted in a wood to roveM
That near their native city spreadA
There of its gayest flowers they woveM
A garland for each other's headA
-
One morn when this dear task was doneE
And just as each the other crown'dA
Seeking deep shade to 'scape the sunE
A piteous spectacle they foundA
-
It was a dead disfigur'd fawnN
Its milk white haunch some monster toreO
It perish'd in that morning's dawnN
Nor had the sun yet dried its goreO
-
Cornelia nature's genuine childA
Caress'd the dead with pity paleB
It's mangled limb with gesture mildA
She shrouded in her sea green veilB
-
The sympathetic pair agreedA
To form a grave without a spadeA
Bury their fawn beneath a treeP
And chaunt a requiem to his shadeA
-
Fortunio had a rustic knifeQ
With this their feeling task they plann'dA
And often in a friendly strifeQ
They claim'd it from each other's handA
-
But ere their tedious toil advanc'dA
Towards its kind and tender endA
Cornelia as her quick eye glanc'dA
Saw what escap'd her toiling friendA
-
It was a sight that well might shakeR
A little heart of stouter mouldA
A sight that made Cornelia quakeR
And all her quivering fibres coldA
-
A furious Stag advancing sprungS
Eager along the echoing woodA
As if vindictive for his youngS
To reach the spot where now they stoodA
-
Cornelia scarce could stand for sheP
Began her guardian to entreatA
Seizing his busy arm to fleeP
Far from the fawn before her feetA
-
The youth her painful terror sawH
And with a manly sterness saidA
In a firm voice inspiring aweT
Cornelia I must be obeyedA
-
True love is brave whate'er may chanceH
Behind this tree's protecting boleB
Stand thou nor fear the Stag's advanceH
But trust to thy Fortunio's soulB
-
The faithful maid in double dreadA
Fear'd to offend him more than deathU
And now as near the fierce foe spedA
Behind the tree she pants for breathU
-
Yet peeping thence in fond alarmV
Most trembling for her guardian's lifeQ
She looks expecting that his armV
Would brandish his defensive knifeQ
-
Amazement kept the trembler muteA
To see him hurl it far awayW
And from his bosom pluck his fluteA
And fearlessly begin to playW
-
The furious parent of the deadA
Marking him near his blood stain'd youngS
Aim'd at his breast with hostile headA
As near the dauntless boy he sprungS
-
But ere the branching horns could reachX
That object of ill founded ireY
Sounds of resistless magic teachX
Submission to the savage sireZ
-
The young musician richly pour'dA
Notes from his pipe so wond'rous sweetA
A rav'nous pard must have ador'dA
And melted at the minstrel's feetA
-
So softly plaintive was the strainA2
No living thing unmov'd could hearB2
What took from terror all its painA2
And mixt delight with sorrow's tearK
-
The Stag with a pathetic graceH
Look'd up most eloquently muteA
And sighing in Fortunio's faceH
Now lick'd the hand that held his fluteA
-
Cornelia saw with blest reliefC2
The scene that every fear dismistA
And sharing all his love and griefC2
Her foe so humaniz'd she kistA
-
Then by her brave musician's sideA
She fondly claspt his honour'd handA
And give me credit now she criedA
For staying at thy stern commandA
-
Henceforth tho' plung'd in perils newD2
I shrink from none if thou art nearF
But feel our sacred maxim trueD2
That perfect love will cast out fearF
-
This Stag to thee will ever shewD2
The gratitude thy strains inspireY
And those who soothe a parent's woeE2
Are dear to Heaven's all soothing sireZ
-
Our duty to this hapless fawnN
We will perform and often flyB
To hail his grave at early dawnN
Youth and misfortune claim a sighB
-
The lovely nymph prophetic spokeF2
The Stag as taught by powers aboveG2
Oft met them at their fav'rite oakF2
And seem'd to bless their tender loveG2
-
Here oft the little fair retir'dA
Here lov'd from gayer scenes withdrawnN
To breathe what harmony inspir'dA
A dirge to memorize the fawnN
