Now blest be Providence divineA
Surpassing human skillB
That often takes from things malignA
The privilege of illB
-
Good folks who love a simple strainC
That seems like fancy's soundD
Rejoicing when in nature's reignC
The marvellous is foundD
-
As strange a tale as history knowsE
Accept in artless rhymeF
An honest Greek relates in proseE
This wonder of old timeF
-
The antients gloried to describeG
And held such wonders dearH
For of the Psylli's signal tribeG
'Twas their delight to hearI
-
The Psylli were an Afric clanJ
Of wond'rous power possestD
Fierce snakes of enmity to manJ
They could with ease divestD
-
This gift they boasted with delightD
A gift to them confin'dD
Exemption from the viper's biteD
Of most malignant kindD
-
This native gift they deem'd a testD
To prove their genuine raceK
By every true born child possestD
Not granted to the baseK
-
In brains that burn from Afric sunsL
Mad jealousy will riseM
Till thro' the heart the frenzy runsL
And bursts all tender tiesM
-
A Lybian of this far fam'd clanJ
Had dream'd his wife untrueN
And soon the madd'ning wretch beganJ
His child with hate to viewN
-
That child which till his fatal dreamO
Was from base slander bredD
The happy sire with joy extremeO
Had fondled blest and fedD
-
And never infant more deserv'dD
To prove his father's joyP
Of two years old and nobly nerv'dD
A brave Herculean boyP
-
Nature with passion long at strifeQ
Contended in his breastD
Till to expose his infant's lifeQ
He form'd a deadly testD
-
No common trial would sufficeR
For his suspicious mindD
His rage a trial would deviseM
Of most tremendous kindD
-
Sansado so the wretch was nam'dD
A cruel brother taughtD
With equal jealousy inflam'dD
To aid his barb'rous thoughtD
-
Him many a deadly snake to feedD
Sansado would engageS
And more by many a noxious weedD
Exasperate their rageS
-
And now the settled day arrivesT
Fixt for their savage joyP
To risk two unprotected livesU
Poor Neela and her boyP
-
For if so jealous rage decreedD
One reptile wounds the childD
Neela upon that couch must bleedD
They think she has defil'dD
-
God save thee Neela in a strifeQ
By nature's heart abhorr'dD
And God defend each hapless wifeQ
Who has a jealous lordD
-
But see the brothers bent on illB
Neela yet kind and calmV
Beholds a knot of Snakes that fillB
A basket made of palmV
-
No fear her blameless mind alarmsW
But quick with scornful joyP
One basely holds her by the armsW
One grasps her fondling boyP
-
The sire himself with gesture wildD
His thoughtless offspring takesX
And seats his unoffending childD
Amidst these angry SnakesX
-
Angry at first they foam'd aroundD
The boy who on them prestD
He unappall'd sat gayly crown'dD
With many a shining crestD
-
Stretching his little hands he play'dD
Unconscious of a fearH
With all the monsters he survey'dD
And smil'd at every spearH
-
Now free but with a fixt disdainC
Behold the mother standD
She frowns upon the brothers twainC
Nor takes the proffer'd handD
-
Do not dear wife my kindness shunY
Henceforth my comfort beZ
And let us jointly bless my sonY
Who witnesses for theeZ
-
So with quick speed Sansado criedD
With mingled joy and shameA2
The noble Neela thus repliedD
With eyes of temperate flameA2
-
No I renounce thee and thy roofB2
For Heaven who shields my youngC2
Bids me abjure thy love not proofB2
'Gainst slander's vip'rous tongueC2
-
It is my duty to desertD
A guard I must despiseM
Farewell weak man my child unhurtD
On Providence reliesM
-
Now brave a coward he might turnD2
Beneath thy base controulB
But from his mother he shall learnD2
The empire of the soulB
-
She spoke she kept with truth most rareE2
Her purpose nobly wildD
And made by her maternal careE2
A hero of her childD
