Maternal love thou wond'rous powerA
By no base fears controul'dB
Tis truly thine in danger's hourA
To make the tender boldB
-
And yet more marvellous thy swayC
Amid the pathless wildB
Can humanize the beast of preyC
And make the savage mildB
-
A traveller on Afric's shoreD
Near to a forest's sideB
That shook with many a monster's roarD
With hasty caution hiedB
-
But suddenly full in his wayC
A Panther he descriesE
Athwart his very road she layC
And fixt his fearful eyesE
-
With backward step and watchful stareF
If refuge there may beG
He hopes to gain with trembling careF
The refuge of a treeG
-
A fruitless hope the Panther movesE
Perceiving his intentB
And vain his utmost caution provesE
Her purpose to preventB
-
But no fierce purpose to destroyH
The dreadful beast impellsE
Her gesture blending grief and joyH
Far other motive tellsE
-
Round him she fawns with gentle paceE
Her actions all entreatB
She looks imploring in his faceE
And licks his hands and feetB
-
The traveller a Roman bornI
Was of a generous mindB
He never view'd distress with scornI
To all that breath'd most kindB
-
And soon all selfish fear apartB
His native spirit roseE
The suffering Panther won his heartB
He only felt her woesE
-
Jove help thee gracious beast he criedB
Some evil wounds thee soreD
And it shall be my joy and prideB
Thy sorrows to exploreD
-
The beast his kindness understoodB
Fix'd on his robe a clawJ
And gently to the neighb'ring woodB
Appear'd her friend to drawJ
-
How little is the want of speechK
When kindness rules the heartB
Gesture will then all lessons teachK
That language can impartB
-
The Roman Caelius was his nameL
By brave compassion sway'dB
Conjectur'd all the Panther's aimL
And gave her willing aidB
-
For in the forest with his guideB
He hears her wailing youngM
To whom the tender beast repliedB
With a maternal tongueM
-
He sees them only in his thoughtB
For in a curious snareF
The hapless little creatures caughtB
Could only murmur thereF
-
Deep in an earthy trap they layC
An iron grate aboveN
Precluded them from chearful dayC
And from a mother's loveN
-
But quicken'd by the touching soundB
The little captives madeB
The generous C lius clear'd the groundB
And all the snare display'dB
-
Two vigorous cubs spring up to lightB
And to their parent hasteB
C lius a third in tenderer plightB
Within the pit embrac'dB
-
For in he leap'd to save the youngM
That seem'd to suffer harmO
And swiftly from the pit he sprungM
The cub beneath his armO
-
The conscious nursling lick'd his cheekP
With young endearment sweetB
He kiss'd and laid it safe tho' weakP
Before its parent's feetB
-
Too faint is language to describeQ
The Panther's grateful gleeG
Contemplating her little tribeQ
From deadly bondage freeG
-
By gesture that with meaning glowsE
All eloquence aboveN
She largely on her friend bestowsE
Protection thanks and loveN
-
Seeing him start to hear a roarD
That spoke the lion nearR
She guides him thro' her wood once moreD
And banishes his fearR
-
Here when she brought him to his roadB
Her gesture said we partB
With friendship all her features glow'dB
Each movement spoke her heartB
-
He shar'd her feelings Bless your denS
He said as he withdrewT
For gratitude has fled from menS
And seems to live with youT
