Lovely woman how brave is thy soulA
When duty and love are combin'dB
Then danger in vain would controulA
Thy tender yet resolute mindB
-
Boulla thus in an African gladeC
In her season of beauty and youthD
In the deadliest danger display'dC
All the quick sighted courage of truthD
-
Tho' the wife of a peasant yet noneE
Her grandeur of heart rose aboveF
And her husband was nature's true sonE
In simplicity labour and loveF
-
'Twas his task and he manag'd it wellA
The herd of his master to guideG
Where a marshy and desolate dellA
Daily drink to the cattle suppliedG
-
In this toil a dear playfellow shar'dH
A little brave sensible boyI
Who nobly for manhood prepar'dH
Made every kind office his joyI
-
One day as the dell they drew nearJ
They perceiv'd all the cattle aroundK
Starting wild in tumultuous fearJ
As if thunder had shaken the groundK
-
The peasant in wonder and aweL
Keenly search'd for the cause of their frightM
Very soon it's just motive he sawN
And he shudder'd himself at the sightM
-
For couch'd in the midst of the gladeC
An enormous fierce Lion he view'dO
His eye balls shot flame thro' the shadeC
And with gore his vast jaw was imbru'dC
-
Fly boy to thy mother be sureP
Dear child do not tremble for meQ
I fear not if thou art secureP
I shall 'scape in the limbs of a treeQ
-
He spoke flying light as the breezeR
His cattle were scatter'd beforeS
Them he thought that the Lion would seizeR
And for human food hunger no moreS
-
But athirst for the blood of a manT
All the herd he in fury disdain'dC
And leapt at the bough as he ranT
Which the peasant had rapidly gain'dC
-
He leapt but he fail'd of his preyU
For the peasant was happily higherV
Beneath him indignant he layU
And watch'd him with vigilant ireW
-
The boy had his father obey'dC
And ran for his rustic abodeC
And oft turning that father survey'dC
And hardly remember'd his roadC
-
But when with a burst of delightC
His father he saw in a treeQ
He lost all his sense of affrightC
And his terror was turn'd into gleeQ
-
Then quick to his mother he spedC
And quickly his story he toldC
As she heard it she shudder'd with dreadC
But love made her suddenly boldC
-
She remember'd that oft to her boyI
She a lesson of archery gaveX
Then the bow she resolv'd to employI
And by courage his father to saveX
-
Soon forth from a curious old chestC
A bundle of arrows she drewY
The gift of a warrior their guestC
And ting'd with a poisonous glueY
-
With a bow that the chief us'd aloneZ
Which her arm could not easily drawN
This bow she preferr'd to her ownZ
In these moments of hope and of aweL
-
And now they both haste from their cotC
The stripling his mother beforeS
And keenly he shew'd her the spotC
As the bow he exultingly boreS
-
More cautious as now they advanceA2
The boy to his eager desireV
Espied with a love guided glanceA2
The half shrouded head of his sireV
-
He leapt with a rapturous joyI
But marking the Lion belowA
In silence the spirited boyI
Made ready the powerful bowB2
-
From his mother an arrow he caughtC
In hope's youthful extacy hotC
And softly said quick as his thoughtC
O grant to my hand the first shotC
-
His entreaty she could not refuseC2
Yet hardly had time to consentC
Impatient his aim not to loseC2
The stripling the bow would have bentC
-
He labour'd to bend it in vainD2
It surpass'd all the strength of his yearsE2
The brave boy full of anguish and painD2
Let it fall to the ground with his tearsF2
-
His father beheld him with griefG2
Seeing both he yet more and more grievesH2
While his eyes as in search of reliefG2
Look forth from his refuge of leavesH2
-
But Boulla who caught his keen eyeI2
Now grasp'd her adventurous bowB2
And with prayers addrest to the skyI2
She aim'd at the Lion belowA
-
Good angels her arrow directC
On its flight these dear beings dependC
Whose kindness by danger uncheck'dC
Has deserv'd to find Heaven their friendC
-
See the beast Lo his eye balls yet burnJ2
On his prey he still gloats with a yawnK2
Yet the woman he does not discernJ2
And her bow is undauntedly drawnK2
-
O love it is thine to impartC
Such force as none else can bestowA
She has shot with the strength of her heartC
She has pierced her infuriate foeA
-
While his jaws were enormously spreadC
The truth of her archery seeQ
Thro' his cheek her sure arrow has spedC
It fastens his flesh to the treeQ
-
Too soon of her conquest secureP
She runs within reach of his clawN
But in tortures he cannot endureP
He has struck her to earth with his pawN
-
Lo anxious the peasant descendsL2
Good peasant no more be afraidC
Heaven sent her the bravest of friendsL2
In the boy who has rush'd to her aidC
-
Before thou couldst spring to the groundC
Her boy made her triumph completeC
And contriving a marvellous woundC
He has stretch'd her foe dead at her feetC
-
From the tree by his struggles releas'dC
While he roll'd in his own blood afloatC
Brave Demba ran up to the beastC
And darted ten shafts in his throatC
-
Their poisons collected affordC
Lethargic relief to his pangsM2
And Death of all nature the lordC
Thy shadows now rest on his fangsM2
-
Now love thy own fancy employI
For words are too feeble to traceN2
The father the mother the boyI
In triumph's extatic embraceN2
