Of dogs who sav'd a living friendA
Most nobly ye have readB
Now to a nobler still attendA
A guardian of the deadB
-
As o'er wild Alpine scenes I stray'dC
Not far from that retreatD
Where Bruno with celestial aidC
First plann'd his sacred seatD
-
An anchorite of noble mienE
Attracted my regardF
Majestic as that savage sceneE
Or as a Cambrian bardF
-
He to no silent dome belongsG
The rock is his domainH
It echoes to his nightly songsG
Devotion's lonely strainH
-
His mansion is a tranquil grotF
Form'd in the living stoneI
My view of the sequester'd spotF
I owe to chance aloneI
-
For happening near his cell to roveJ
Enamour'd of the wildF
I heard within a piny groveJ
What seem'd a plaintive childF
-
The distant cry so struck my earK
I hasten'd to the groundF
But saw surpris'd as I drew nearL
The author of the soundF
-
No human form yet one I thoughtF
With human feelings fill'dF
And from his tongue by nature taughtF
Strange notes of sorrow thrill'dF
-
Unseen myself I clearly sawM
A dog that couchant moan'dF
He struck the hard earth with his pawM
Then look'd at Heaven and groan'dF
-
With silent caution I drew nearL
To mark this friend of manN
Expressing grief in sobs so clearL
It through my bosom ranN
-
The noble beast was black as jetF
And as a lion largeO
He look'd as on a tombstone setF
To hold the dead in chargeO
-
Grand was his visage round his neckP
Broad silver rings he woreQ
These rings that his dark body deckP
The cross of Malta boreQ
-
I gaz'd but soon my steps tho' softF
Announced a stranger nearL
The brave beast bounded up aloftF
Nor was I free from fearL
-
But soon his master's voice represtF
And call'd him to his sideF
And soon I was the hermit's guestF
He was my guard and guideF
-
My own intrusion to excuseR
The wond'rous dog I prais'dF
Whose milder mien my eye reviewsS
Delighted and amaz'dF
-
If I disturb thy calm retreatF
Divinely calm indeedF
The noble servant at thy feetF
May for my pardon pleadF
-
That noble servant in my sightF
Whom strength and grace adornT
Announces if I read arightF
A master nobly bornT
-
The sire replied with graceful bendF
No not my servant heU
A noble independent friendF
He deigns to live with meU
-
But stranger if you kindly restF
His story you shall hearK
And all that makes my sable guestF
Most singularly dearL
-
Here it has been my chosen lotF
Some awful years to spendF
Few months have pass'd since near this spotF
I gain'd this signal friendF
-
This friend with whom to live and dieF
Is now my dearest aimV
He likes the world no more than IF
And Hero is his nameV
-
Some two miles off as near a woodF
Of deepest gloom I stray'dF
Struck by strange sounds I wond'ring stoodF
They echoed from the shadeF
-
First like a noise in troubled dreamsW
But soon distinct I heardF
A dog's triumphant bark and screamsW
That spoke a dying birdF
-
A bird of loud portentous noteF
One of the vulture raceX
Which shepherds will to death devoteF
In sanguinary chaceX
-
I thought some shepherd's joy to shareY
And hurried to the soundF
To what I had expected thereY
Far different scene I foundF
-
A man of blood bespotted vestF
I saw upon the earthZ
And Malta's cross upon his breastF
Spoke him of noble birthZ
-
Misfortune long had press'd him soreQ
I know not how he diedF
He had been dead two days or moreQ
When I his corse descriedF
-
Him as their prey two vultures seekA2
With ravenous rage abhorr'dF
But Hero guarded from their beakA2
The visage of his lordF
-
When first my eyes on Hero glanc'dF
One vulture he had slainH
The second scar'd as I advancedF
Flew off in fearful painH
-
Enchanted with a guard so braveB2
So faithful to the deadF
The wounded dog to soothe and saveB2
With beating heart I spedF
-
He lick'd my hand by me carestF
But him with grief I sawM
Half famish'd and his gallant breastF
Gor'd by the vulture's clawM
-
Tho' anxious o'er his wounds I bendF
By kindness or by forceC2
I could not tempt this generous friendF
To quit the pallid corseC2
-
The body to my cell I bearY
This mourner with it movedF
Then he submitted to my careY
And all my aid approv'dF
-
In the soft stone that's near my cellD2
I soon entomb'd the deadF
With stone above I shield him wellD2
And laurels round I spreadF
-
Oft to the spot with mournful praiseE2
The mindful Hero springsF2
And in such notes as he can raiseE2
A requiem he singsF2
-
Dear faithful dog if man to meU
Had half thy virtue shewnH
From social life I should not fleeU
To roam the wild aloneH
-
No not alone nor yet in woeG2
While here thy virtues shineH
For I defy the world to shewH2
Associate like to mineH
-
The dog he now press'd to his heartF
Then utter'd this desireI2
Stranger if thine a poet's artF
Let Hero wake thy lyreJ2
-
His wish was kind may love so trueH2
Ne'er want its wishes longK2
Thus from his fond suggestion grewH2
This tributary songK2
