Not only men of stormy mindsA
The storms of trouble knowB
All creatures of this earth must findC
A share of earthly woeB
-
Ye whose pure hearts with pity swellD
For pain by all incurr'dE
Hear how affliction once befellD
Serenity's sweet birdE
-
Ye fair who in your carols praiseF
The Halcyon's happy stateG
Hear in compassionate amazeF
One Halcyon's hapless fateG
-
A nymph Selina is her nameH
Lovely in mind and mienI
When spring however early cameH
Was fond of walks marineI
-
Between a woman and a childJ
In tender charms she grewK
And lov'd with fancy sweetly wildJ
The lonely shore to viewK
-
Nature she studied every springL
To all her offspring kindC
And taught the birds of wildest wingL
To trust her gentle mindC
-
Now brilliant in her youthful eyeM
The Halcyon's feathers flameH
She wish'd a pair of these tho' shyM
Affectionately tameH
-
Nor wish'd she long for such her careN
Such her attractive skillO
She makes e'en rovers of the airN
Attentive to her willO
-
When stormy March had ceas'd to roarP
Selina joy'd to roveQ
And watch a Halcyon on the shoreP
Within a little coveQ
-
Familiariz'd by slow degreesR
They met in friendly moodS
'Till her bright favourite on her kneesR
Would perch for offer'd foodS
-
How joyous was Selina's breastT
When thus she had prevail'dU
Each coming of her radiant guestT
How tenderly she hail'dU
-
It seem'd her guest so frequent hereV
The damsel us'd to roamW
And deem'd this little cove so dearX
Her palace and her homeW
-
When April's sun the coast had warm'dY
New joy the nymph possestY
She saw her favourite bird had form'dY
A curious downy nestY
-
How did her tender heart rejoiceZ
What prayers she then preferredY
That she might with her tuneful voiceZ
Delight the brooding birdY
-
-
Gay nature smil'd the prayer she blestY
Selina softly sungA2
And felt delight of higher zestY
She nurst the callow youngA2
-
But Oh when human pleasures riseB2
To enviable heightY
How subtly dark misfortune fliesB2
To crush them in her flightY
-
One morn as nigh the cove so dearX
The quick Selina cameH
A sight which caus'd her grievous fearX
Convuls'd her tender frameH
-
Near it she draws but entrance thereN
A swelling sea deniesB2
For hostile to her callow careN
The cruel waters riseB2
-
Close to this cove's contracted sideY
Three massive stones were laidY
Oft in bare sand now scarce descriedY
Fresh surges round them play'dY
-
To one the nearest to the cellD
Alarm'd Selina wadesC2
To mark how far the wild wave's swellD
Her darling cove invadesC2
-
Behold she kneels with folded handsD2
Kneels on the rugged stoneE2
Whence now her anxious eye commandsD2
The cell once deem'd her ownE2
-
How keen her anguish to surveyF2
The tide fill half the coveQ
Forth from its seat with savage swayF2
Her Halcyon's nest it droveQ
-
The nest now floats and from the shoreP
The tortur'd parent sprungA2
With wildest terror hovers o'erG2
And shrieks around her youngA2
-
Selina marks the barbarous seaH2
The leaky nest divideY
And bold her little friends to freeH2
She plunges in the tideY
-
The tender sinking tribe she caughtY
But ah she caught too lateY
More rapid than her generous thoughtY
Was unrelenting fateY
-
In vain with tender pity's claspI2
To her warm breast she holdsJ2
The young whom death's remorseless graspI2
In his dark shade infoldsJ2
-
Off flew the parent in despairN
Her heart appears to burnK2
Nor can the sympathetic fairN
Persuade her to returnK2
-
She bearing in her robe the deadY
The parent calls anewK
'Till rising rocks that near them spreadY
Conceals her from the viewK
-
Here she despairing now to healL2
The wretched parent's painM2
Sat on a rock in sorrowing zealL2
And kiss'd the dead againN2
-
Her tender nerves confess'd a shockO2
To hear a sudden gunP2
A smuggler's vessel from the rockO2
She now perceives to runP2
-
But with what grief the sound she heardY
How pants her heart with dreadY
As she beholds her favourite birdY
Now fluttering o'er her headY
-
That flutter is the gasp of deathQ2
As conscious of it's nestY
It breathes to her its parting breathQ2
And falls upon her breastY
-
Weep not sweet nymph with vain regretY
Your favourite's lifeless stateY
But rather think that it has metY
An enviable fateY
-
Yes to this gentle bird indeedY
It's mercy Heaven has shewnP2
And in it's end you now may readY
An emblem of your ownP2
-
When you dear nymph have suffer'd allR2
Your share of earthly woeB
O may that portion be as smallR2
As mortal e'er may knowB
-
Close in a death like infant's restY
Those heaven reflecting eyesJ2
And dropping on an angel's breastY
Be wafted to the skiesJ2
