Ingratitude of earth the shameA
Thou monster at whose hated nameA
The nerves of kindness akeB
Would I could drive thee from mankindC
By telling how a grateful mindC
Once dignified a snakeB
-
The tale is antient and is sweetD
To mortals who with joy repeatD
What soothes the feeling heartE
The first of virtues that may boastF
The power to soothe and please it mostF
Sweet gratitude thou artE
-
The reptile whom thy beauties raiseG
Has an unquestion'd claim to praiseG
That justice will confirmH
The Muses with a graceful prideI
May turn from thankless man asideI
To celebrate a wormH
-
In Arcady grave authors writeJ
There liv'd a Serpent the delightJ
Of an ingenuous childK
Proud of his kindness the brave boyL
Fed and caress'd it with a joyL
Heroically mildK
-
Pleased all his gambols to attendM
The snake his playfellow and friendM
Still in his sight he keptN
The reptile ever at his sideI
Obeys him waking and with prideI
Would watch him while he sleptN
-
Once ere her darling was awakeB
The anxious mother saw the snakeB
So twin'd around his armO
She begged her husband to conveyP
The fondling serpent far awayP
For fear of casual harmO
-
The happy father of the childK
Himself a being bravely mildK
To her request attendsQ
Conscious such comrades could not partE
Without great anguish of the heartE
He fear'd to wound the friendsQ
-
They both were young and both had shewnR
Affection into habit grownR
With feelings most acuteS
Yet to a parent's duty justT
Tho' griev'd to part them part he mustT
The point bears no disputeS
-
But with a tenderness of mindC
That prov'd him truly not inclinedC
Their friendship to destroyL
He form'd a plan and held it goodU
To hurt as little as he couldU
The Serpent or the boyL
-
To sleep he both with opiates lur'dV
Then in their slumber's bond secur'dV
See in his arms they goW
To woody scenes where for the snakeB
There left entranc'd when he shall wakeB
Both food and shelter growW
-
The slumbering boy awak'd at homeX
And miss'd his friend and wish'd to roamX
And seek the friend he miss'dY
But hearing all his sire had doneR
Soon pacified the grateful sonR
Could not such love resistY
-
He promis'd for his mother's sakeB
Not to recall his exil'd snakeB
Nor wander to his woodU
He was a boy of manly soulZ
And true to honour's just controulZ
He made his promise goodU
-
Nature to these divided friendsQ
Now in their separate lot attendsQ
Time decks them as he fliesA2
The child a graceful stripling growsB2
And freedom on the snake bestowsB2
A formidable sizeA2
-
And now it chanc'd the Arcadian youthC2
Renown'd for courage love and truthC2
Had sought a favourite maidD2
Led by her tender charms to roamX
Forgetting distance from his homeX
Abroad too late he stay'dD2
-
Sooner indeed he meant to startE
To save a watchful parent's heartE
And not one fear exciteJ
But oft as nature's records tellZ
Ere love can utter his farewellZ
Day melts into the nightJ
-
Eager to take the shortest roadE2
That led to his remote abodeE2
He thro' a forest spedF2
There by the moon's slow rising beamG2
He saw a robber's faulchion gleamG2
High brandish'd o'er his headF2
-
A hunter's javelin in his handH2
He scorn'd the ruffian's base demandH2
And made the wretch recoilZ
But numbers from a thicket springI2
The youth they hem within a ringI2
And threaten to despoilZ
-
He then alarm'd calls loud for aidD2
And sudden from the rustling shadeD2
A wond'rous sound they hearJ2
The startled ruffians turned in dreadF2
Some shriek'd some shouted and some fledF2
Their foe approaches nearK2
-
Against one wretch of form uncouthC2
Who basely struck the encircled youthC2
And gave his foot a woundL2
This shadowy foe of silent tongueM2
Had from his secret ambush sprungM2
And beat him to the groundL2
-
Another as he fled in hasteN2
The youth's defender then embrac'dN2
With such a deadly claspO2
The villain fell and in the strifeP2
Groan'd out his miserable lifeP2
In horror's speechless gaspO2
-
Who can describe the youth's surpriseA2
When by the moon beam he descriesA2
The source of his escapeQ2
That aid who crush'd his murd'rous foesA2
To meet his gratitude now roseA2
And in a serpent's shapeQ2
-
My Zoe hear him now exclaimA
The child had by that fondling nameA
Been used his snake to callZ
The reptile heard and at the soundL2
Began with pitying care aroundL2
His wounded foot to crawlZ
-
The blood she staunch'd with tender tongueM2
Then higher to his hand she sprungM2
And lick'd with fond caressA2
Her gestures all this truth declareR2
Thy Zoe makes thy life her careR2
And joys in her successA2
-
The wasting night now wears awayP
The youth's fond mother at his stayP
To fear maternal yieldsA2
And doubting of some dire mischanceA2
She hurries ere the morn's advanceA2
To seek him in the fieldsA2
-
With what delight with what amazeA2
Her eye her smiling son surveysA2
And rolling by his sideI
A serpent of triumphant airR2
Who seems his fond regard to shareR2
And serve him as a guideI
-
For faithful Zoe would attendM
The footsteps of her wounded friendM
'Till he at home may restS2
His mother learnt her wond'rous truthC2
And clasping the dear rescued youthC2
His brave confederate blestS2
-
Zoe no more condemn'd to roamX
Now grew an inmate of their homeX
The snake at Athens rear'dT2
The symbol of Minerva's powerU2
Lodg'd as her servant in her towerU2
Was never more rever'dT2
-
Zoe was the delight of allZ
Obedient to each friendly callZ
From all she honour wonR
But her the mother most caresstT2
And fondly shew'd to every guestT2
The guardian of her sonR
