Of creatures that to man attendA
His pastime or his wealthB
The Horse we cherish as a friendA
To sickness and to healthB
-
Bless them who shield a steed from woeC
By age from toil releas'dD
And hated be the proud who shewE
No mercy to their beastD
-
A wretch once doom'd tho' rich and strongF
His faithful horse to bleedG
But tell his fate my moral songF
For that atrocious deedG
-
An antient knight of Kentish raceH
Of his athletic frameI
Prone to indulge the passions baseH
Sir Geoffrin his nameI
-
Against a priest indulg'd his rageJ
Who charitably goodK
To shield a widow's helpless ageJ
His avarice withstoodK
-
With abject choler fierce and hotL
The knight perforce would gainM
And blend her little garden plotL
With his superb domainM
-
The priest who on that very groundN
To soothe his wrath would striveO
In frantic passion's fit he boundN
And buried him aliveO
-
The wretch was seiz'd with shame and fearP
Tho' he his crime would boastQ
When suddenly he chanc'd to hearR
His king lay off the coastQ
-
'Twas gallant Harold in that dayS
Elate with regal powerT
Becalm'd his stately vessel layS
Near Geoffrin's high towerT
-
The royal mercy to surprizeH
He now resolves with speedG
Haste hither bring he wildly criesH
My strongest favourite steedG
-
It was a steed of noblest kindU
In spirit and in limbV
On which the desp'rate knight design'dU
To the king's ship to swimV
-
Now by the swelling ocean's sideW
He mounts his courser braveX
Spurs him with domineering prideW
And plunges in the waveX
-
Us'd to his bold caprices oftY
And equal to his weightZ
The courser toss'd his mane aloftY
And swam with breast elateZ
-
The knight now flourishes his swordA2
As near the ship he drawsH
The wond'rous sight strikes all on boardA2
Who throng to find the causeH
-
The sailors round their sov'reign croudA2
Who on the vessels sternB2
Now hails the knight's approach aloudA2
Eager his aim to learnB2
-
Provok'd by villains one I slewE
And own him rashly slainM
Hence to thy clemency I flewE
My pardon to obtainM
-
Now by St George thou vent'rous knightA2
Thy steed has nobly doneC2
Swim back and pardon make thee lightA2
Thy pardon he has wonC2
-
The knight now with a joyous springD2
His horse's neck embrac'dA2
Then blessing thrice his gracious kingD2
He steer'd him back in hasteA2
-
Now as he touch'd his native sandA2
And near his castle gateA2
He saw the weeping widow standA2
And mock'd her mournful stateA2
-
Woman thy threats touch me no moreE2
I ride on safety's wingD2
My brave horse brings me safe to shoreE2
With pardon from my kingD2
-
Kings seem to grant what God deniesH
Trust my prophetic breathF2
So the indignant dame repliesH
That horse shall prove thy deathF2
-
She spoke and with a voice so keenG2
It search'd his inmost soulH2
And caus'd a storm of fearful spleenG2
Thro' his dark brain to rollH2
-
Half credulous half wildly braveX
Now doubt now rage prevailsH
He stood like a black suspended waveX
Struck by two adverse galesH
-
A doubt by superstition nurstA2
Made all just thoughts recedeA2
Frantic he wav'd his sword and pierc'dA2
His life preserving steedA2
-
Thy prophecies I thus destroyI2
He cried thou wretched croneJ2
Threats on my days no more employI2
But tremble for thy ownJ2
-
Striding away his steed he leftA2
In his pure blood to rollH2
He quickly of all aid bereftA2
Breath'd out his nobler soulH2
-
The boastful knight now gay with prideA2
By his successful crimesH
Floating on folly's golden tideA2
Prosper'd in stormy timesH
-
Ungrateful both to man and beastA2
His sovereign he betray'dA2
And lent ere Harold's empire ceas'dA2
The Norman treacherous aidA2
-
The Norman tyrant much carestA2
This proud and abject slaveX
And lands by worthier lords possestA2
For his base succour gaveX
-
Now years since that eventful hourT
In which his courser bledA2
Had pour'd increase of wealth and pow'rK2
On his aspiring headA2
-
As near with much enlarged estateA2
To his domain he drewE
He chanc'd before his castle gateA2
A signal scene to viewE
-
The scene his war steel'd nerves could shockL2
Seated on mossy stonesH
The widow leaning 'gainst a rockL2
Wept o'er his horse's bonesH
-
Enrag'd from his new steed he vaultsH
Quick with his foot to spurnB2
These bones that bid his bloody faultsH
To his base mind returnB2
-
The head now bleach'd his proud foot strikesH
With such indignant speedA2
The bone its fierce aggressor spikesH
It is his turn to bleedA2
-
The trivial wound the wrathful knightA2
Disdains to search with careM2
But soon he finds the wound tho' slightA2
Death lurks in ambush thereM2
-
Now to his bed of sorrow boundA2
By penitential painM
He seems by this heart reaching woundA2
A purer mind to gainM
-
Near to his couch he bids with careM2
The widow to be broughtA2
And speaks to her with soften'd airM2
His self correcting thoughtA2
-
True prophetess I feel thee nowN2
So God my crimes forgiveO2
As I with thee true concord vowN2
In comfort may'st thou liveO
-
Behold upon this charter'd scrollH2
A pictur'd cottage standA2
I give it thee with all my soulH2
And its adjacent landA2
-
The only rent I will assumeP2
Be this At close of dayA2
Sit thou with pity on my tombP2
And for my spirit prayA2
-
That tomb be rais'd by sculpture's aidA2
To warn men from my guiltA2
My horse's head beside me laidA2
Whose blood I basely spiltA2
-
He spoke he died the tomb was madeA2
His statue look'd to HeavenC2
And daily then the widow pray'dA2
His crimes might be forgivenC2
