Nature what heart may here by theeA
Most truly brave be styledB
The tender mother's it must beA
When struggling for her childB
-
A Scottish tale of serious truthC
Will make the maxim clearD
I heard it from a shepherd youthC
As nature's self sincereD
-
On Scotland's wildest loneliest groundE
The subject of my taleF
Liv'd where incumbent mountains frown'dE
High o'er her peaceful valeF
-
The heroine of nature sheA
No vain ambition knewG
Her bairns and goats she nurs'd with gleeA
To love and labour trueG
-
Her hut within the valley stoodH
Where thin grass grew aloneI
No shade had she from lofty woodH
But much from towering stoneI
-
For o'er her vale a mountain's crownJ
In loftiest horror hungK
A ravenous Eagle half way downJ
Nurs'd her imperial youngK
-
Jessy herself so was she call'dL
Possess'd an eagle's eyeM
And her quick vision unappall'dL
Had mark'd the nest on highM
-
But of a fearless heart she deem'dL
The royal bird her friendL
Nor thought its rage tho' fierce it scream'dL
Would to her vale descendL
-
With plunder borne thro' distant airN
She saw it stain the rockO
Yet trusted it would nobly spareN
Her little neighbouring flockO
-
Ah Jessy oft the fancied friendL
Commits a cruel wrongP
Weak neighbours seldom should dependL
On kindness from the strongP
-
No manly guard hast thou with theeA
A savage foe to scareN
For thy good man far off to seaA
The distant billows bearN
-
That best of guards thou oft has knownI
But of his aid bereftL
Two little boys with thee aloneI
Are all thy treasures leftL
-
The eldest grew with manly graceQ
His years yet barely sevenR
A stripling of a sweeter faceQ
Has never gaz'd on HeavenR
-
He was indeed a friend most rareN
To chear his lonely motherS
And aid her in her constant careN
His little baby brotherS
-
With these to Jessy much endear'dL
Whom from the world she hidL
Three nurslings more she fondly rear'dL
Two lambkins and a kidL
-
Most tender playmates all the fiveT
None stray'd the vale beyondL
They were the happiest imps aliveT
All of each other fondL
-
And Jessy all with joy survey'dL
With joy her heart ran o'erS
When they their little gambols play'dL
She spinning at her doorU
-
But how mischance will interveneV
This spot of sweet delightL
One eventide became a sceneV
Of anguish and affrightL
-
The elder boy gay Donald chanc'dL
Far from the door to playW
Lest now within the vale advanc'dL
His kid might roam awayW
-
The mother sat to watch the valeF
Nor yet his sport forbidL
But starts to see the Eagle sailF
Above the trembling kidL
-
The kid began to quake and cryM
Not so the braver boyX
The full winged savage to defyM
Was his heroic joyX
-
Still nearer sail'd the undaunted birdL
Its destin'd deed undoneR
And when its ravenous scream she heardL
The mother join'd her sonR
-
Their shouts united and each armY
In bold protection spreadL
Secur'd the kid from real harmY
Tho' now with fear half deadL
-
Some furlongs from their cottage sillZ
Now pass'd this anxious sceneV
There they had left as safe from illZ
The sleeping babe sereneV
-
The savage bird the kid renounc'dL
But round the cottage oftL
Rapid he wheel'd and there he pounc'dL
And bore the babe aloftL
-
Ah who can now that impulse paintL
Which fires the mother's breastL
Nor toil nor danger makes her faintL
She seeks this Eagle's nestL
-
But first with courage clear tho' warmA2
As guides the martial shockO
When British tars prepare to stormA2
A fortress on a rockO
-
She bids to mark the Eagle's flightL
Young Donald watch belowB2
While she will mount the craggy heightL
And to his aerie goB2
-
With filial hope her son who knewG
Her courage and her skillZ
Watch'd to parental orders trueG
Magnanimously stillZ
-
And now his mother out of sightL
He fixt his piercing eyeM
On crags that blaz'd in solar lightL
Whence eagles us'd to flyM
-
He saw as far as eye may kenC2
A crag with blood defil'dL
And entering this aerial denC2
The Eagle and the childL
-
The boy tho' trusting much in GodL
With generous fear was fill'dL
Aware that if those crags she trodL
His mother might be kill'dL
-
His youthful mind was not awareN
How nature may sustainD2
Life guarded by maternal careN
From peril and from painD2
-
And now he sees or thinks he seesE2
His heart begins to pantL
A woman crawling on her kneesE2
Close to the Eagle's hauntL
-
It is thy mother gallant boyX
Lo up her figure springsF2
She darts unheard with speechless joyX
Between the Eagle's wingsF2
-
Behold her arms its neck enchainD2
And clasp her babe belowB2
Th' entangled bird attempts in vainD2
Its burthen to o'erthrowN
-
Now Heaven defend thee mother boldL
Thy peril is extremeG2
Thou'rt dead if thou let go thy holdL
Scar'd by that savage screamG2
-
And bravely if thou keep it fastL
What yet may be thy doomH2
This very hour may be thy lastL
That aerie prove thy tombH2
-
No No thank Heaven O nobly doneD2
O marvellous attackI2
I see thee riding in the sunD2
Upon the Eagle's backI2
-
In vain it buffets with its wingsF2
In vain it wheels aroundL
Still screaming in its airy ringsF2
It sinks towards the groundL
-
Run Donald run she has not stirr'dL
And she is deadly paleF
She's dead and with the dying birdL
Descending to the valeF
-
Lo Donald flies She touches earthJ2
O form'd on earth to shineD2
O mother of unrivall'd worthJ2
And sav'd by aid divineD2
-
She lives unhurt unhurt too liesK2
The baby in her claspL2
And her aerial tyrant diesK2
Just strangled in her graspL2
-
What triumph swelled in Donald's breastL
And o'er his features spreadL
When he his living mother prestL
And held the Eagle deadL
-
Angels who left your realms of blissM2
And on this parent smil'dL
Guard every mother brave as thisM2
In rescuing her childL
