Of all the speechless friends of manA
The faithful dog I deemB
Deserving from the human clanA
The tenderest esteemB
-
This feeling creature form'd to loveC
To watch and to defendD
Was given to man by powers aboveC
A guardian and a friendD
-
I sing of all e'er known to liveE
The truest friend canineF
And glory if my verse may giveG
Brave Fido it is thineF
-
A dog of many a sportive trickH
Tho' rough and large of limbI
Fido would chase the floating stickH
When Lucy cried go swimI
-
And what command could Lucy giveG
Her dog would not obeyJ
For her it seemed his pride to liveE
Blest in her gentle swayJ
-
For conscious of her every careK
He strain'd each feeling nerveL
To please that friend his lady fairK
Commanded him to serveL
-
Of many friends to Lucy dearM
One rose above the restN
Proclaim'd in glory's bright careerM
The monarch of her breastN
-
Tender and brave her Edward cameO
To bid his fair adieuP
To India call'd in honour's nameO
To honour he was trueP
-
The farewell rack'd poor Lucy's heartQ
Nor pain'd her lover lessR
And Fido when he saw them partQ
Seem'd full of their distressR
-
Lucy who thro' her tears descriedQ
His sympathetic airK
Go with him Fido fondly criedQ
And make his life thy careK
-
The dog her order understoodQ
Or seem'd to understandQ
It was his glory to make goodQ
Affection's kind commandQ
-
How he obeyed the price how greatQ
His brave obedience costQ
Fancy would faulter to relateQ
In wild conjecture lostQ
-
But Truth and Love the upright pairK
Who witnessed Fido's worthS
His wond'rous virtue shall declareK
A lesson to the earthS
-
Not in the battle's gory tideQ
Nor in the stormy seasT
No Fido's noble faith was triedQ
In scenes of sportive easeT
-
Often in India's sultry soilU
To brace the languid limbI
'Twas Edward's pleasure after toilU
To take a fearless swimI
-
Bold in a flood he lov'd to leapV
When full the current flow'dQ
Nor dreamt the water dark and deepV
The crocodile's abodeQ
-
And fearless he and Fido oftQ
Along the stream would glideQ
Their custom from the bank aloftQ
To vault into the tideQ
-
But once when Edward had begunW
To cast his clothes asideQ
Round him his dog would anxious runW
And much to check him triedQ
-
So much that had dumb Fido saidQ
Avoid the stream to dayQ
Those words could scarce have plainer madeQ
What duty wish'd to sayQ
-
Edward too eager to enjoyX
The sport where danger layQ
Scolds him for gestures that annoyX
And beats his guard awayQ
-
And naked now and dreaming notQ
How cruel was that blowY
He hurries to the lofty spotQ
In haste to plunge belowY
-
His faithful friend with quicker paceZ
And now with silent tongueA2
Out stript his master in the raceZ
And swift before him sprungA2
-
Heaven how the heart of Edward swell'dQ
Upon the river's brinkB2
When his brave guardian he beheldQ
A glorious victim sinkB2
-
Sink in a watery monster's jawC2
That near the river's sideQ
Too late th' astonish'd Edward sawC2
And shriek'd as Fido diedQ
-
In vain he shriek'd and soon his tearsD2
His heart felt loss deploreE2
Lucy he cries as if she hearsF2
Thy Fido is no moreE2
-
Calamitously lost his formG2
So often thy delightQ
No artist's hand with genius warmG2
Can rescue for thy sightQ
-
But if 'tis sung by friendly bardQ
How he resign'd his breathH2
Thy dog must win the world's regardQ
Immortal in his deathH2
-
'Twas thus the feeling Edward griev'dQ
Nor could his grief divineF
What honours by pure love conceivedQ
Brave Fido would be thineF
-
When Lucy heard of Fido's fateQ
What showers of tears she shedQ
No cost would she have thought too greatQ
To celebrate the deadQ
-
But gold had not the power to raiseI2
A semblance of her friendQ
Yet kind compassion who surveysI2
Soon bids her sorrow endQ
-
A sculptor pity's genuine sonW
Knew her well founded griefJ2
And quickly tho' he promised noneW
Gave her the best reliefJ2
-
He rich in Lucy's sister's heartQ
By love and friendship's aidQ
Of Fido with the happiest artQ
A secret statue madeQ
-
By stealth in Lucy's chamber plac'dQ
It charm'd the mourner thereK
Till Edward with new glory grac'dQ
Rejoin'd his faithful fairK
-
The marble Fido in their sightQ
Enhanc'd their nuptial blissK2
And Lucy every morn and nightQ
Gave him a grateful kissK2
