Men with picked voices chant the namesA
of cities in a huge gallery promisesB
that pull through descending stairwaysC
to a deep rumblingD
-
The rubbing feetE
of those coming to be carried quicken aF
grey pavement into soft light that rocksG
to and fro under the domed ceilingD
across and across from paleH
earthcolored walls of bare limestoneI
-
Covertly the hands of a great clockJ
go round and round Were they toK
move quickly and at once the wholeL
secret would be out and the shufflingD
of all ants be done foreverM
-
A leaning pyramid of sunlight narrowingD
out at a high window moves by the clockJ
disaccordant hands straining out fromN
a center inevitable postures infinitelyO
repeatedP
two twofour twoeightP
Porters in red hats run on narrow platformsQ
This way ma'amR
important not to takeS
the wrong trainT
Lights from the concreteP
ceiling hang crooked butP
Poised horizontalU
on glittering parallels the dingy cylindersV
packed with a warm glow inviting entryO
pull against the hour But brakes canW
hold a fixed posture tillX
The whistleU
-
Not twoeight Not twofour TwoK
-
Gliding windows Colored cooks sweatingD
in a small kitchen TaillightsV
-
In time twofourO
In time twoeightP
-
rivers are tunneled trestlesV
cross oozy swampland wheels repeatingD
the same gesture remain relativelyO
stationary rails forever parallelY
return on themselves infinitelyO
The dance is sureO
