ran adrift on Fire Island shoalJ
met her second husbandK
in a Brooklyn boarding houseL
went with him to Puerto RicoM
bore three more children lostN
her second husband lived hardO
for eight years in St ThomasP
Puerto Rico San Domingo followedQ
the oldest son to New YorkR
lost her daughter lost her babyS
seized the two boys ofC
the oldest son by the second marriageT
mothered them they beingU
motherless fought for themV
against the other grandmotherH
and the aunts brought them hereW
summer after summer defendedX
herself here against thievesY
storms sun fireH
against flies against girlsZ
that came smelling about againstA2
drought against weeds storm tidesB2
neighbors weasels that stole her chickensC2
against the weakness of her own handsD2
against the growing strength ofC
the boys against wind againstA2
the stones against trespassersD2
against rents against her own mindE2

She grubbed this earth with her own handsD2
domineered over this grass plotF2
blackguarded her oldest sonG
into buying it lived here fifteen yearsD2
attained a final loneliness andK
