The dayseye hugging the earthA
in August ha Spring isB
gone down in purpleC
weeds stand high in the cornD
the rainbeaten furrowE
is clotted with sorrelC
and crabgrass theF
branch is black underG
the heavy mass of the leavesH
The sun is upon aF
slender green stemI
ribbed lengthwiseJ
He lies on his backK
it is a woman alsoE
he regards his formerG
majesty andL
round the yellow centerG
split and creviced and done intoM
minute flowerheads he sends outN
his twenty rays a littleC
and the wind is among themI
to grow cool thereO
-
One turns the thing overG
in his hand and looksP
at it from the rear brownedgedN
green and pointed scalesQ
armor his yellowE

But turn and turnR
the crisp petals remainS
brief translucent greenfastenedN
barely touching at the edgesT
blades of limpid seashellU
