The Blessed Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE G HI JKLL AMN ABL AOLO LANA ELPL QRE

Cumhal called out bending his headA
Till Dathi came and stoodB
With a blink in his eyes at the cave mouthC
Between the wind and the woodB
-
And Cumhal said bending his kneesD
'I have come by the windy wayE
To gather the half of your blessednessF
And learn to pray when you prayE
-
'I can bring you salmon out of the streamsG
And heron out of the skies '-
But Dathi folded his hands and smiledH
With the secrets of God in his eyesI
-
And Cumhal saw like a drifting smokeJ
All manner of blessed soulsK
Women and children young men with booksL
And old men with croziers and stolesL
-
'praise God and God's Mother ' Dathi saidA
'For God and God's Mother have sentM
The blessedest souls that walk in the worldN
To fill your heart with content '-
-
'And which is the blessedest ' Cumhal saidA
'Where all are comely and goodB
Is it these that with golden thuriblesL
Are singing about the wood '-
-
'My eyes are blinking ' Dathi saidA
'With the secrets of God half blindO
But I can see where the wind goesL
And follow the way of the windO
-
'And blessedness goes where the wind goesL
And when it is gone we are deadA
I see the blessedest soul in the worldN
And he nods a drunken headA
-
'O blessedness comes in the night and the dayE
And whither the wise heart knowsL
And one has seen in the redness of wineP
The Incorruptible RoseL
-
'That drowsily drops faint leaves on himQ
And the sweetness of desireR
While time and the world are ebbing awayE
In twilights of dew and of fire '-
