The Show Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDE FGHI JK LM NO PQR ST TT UF VWFXY| My soul looked down from a vague height with Death | A |
| As unremembering how I rose or why | B |
| And saw a sad land weak with sweats of dearth | C |
| Gray cratered like the moon with hollow woe | D |
| And fitted with great pocks and scabs of plaques | E |
| - | |
| Across its beard that horror of harsh wire | F |
| There moved thin caterpillars slowly uncoiled | G |
| It seemed they pushed themselves to be as plugs | H |
| Of ditches where they writhed and shrivelled killed | I |
| - | |
| By them had slimy paths been trailed and scraped | J |
| Round myriad warts that might be little hills | K |
| - | |
| From gloom's last dregs these long strung creatures crept | L |
| And vanished out of dawn down hidden holes | M |
| - | |
| And smell came up from those foul openings | N |
| As out of mouths or deep wounds deepening | O |
| - | |
| On dithering feet upgathered more and more | P |
| Brown strings towards strings of gray with bristling spines | Q |
| All migrants from green fields intent on mire | R |
| - | |
| Those that were gray of more abundant spawns | S |
| Ramped on the rest and ate them and were eaten | T |
| - | |
| I saw their bitten backs curve loop and straighten | T |
| I watched those agonies curl lift and flatten | T |
| - | |
| Whereat in terror what that sight might mean | U |
| I reeled and shivered earthward like a feather | F |
| - | |
| And Death fell with me like a deepening moan | V |
| And He picking a manner of worm which half had hid | W |
| Its bruises in the earth but crawled no further | F |
| Showed me its feet the feet of many men | X |
| And the fresh severed head of it my head | Y |
