The Sentry Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDCDEEFGGHIJHJGGK GGKLGGL GGMMKNKNGG

We'd found an old Boche dug out and he knewA
And gave us hell for shell on frantic shellB
Hammered on top but never quite burst throughA
Rain guttering down in waterfalls of slimeC
Kept slush waist high that rising hour by hourD
Choked up the steps too thick with clay to climbC
What murk of air remained stank old and sourD
With fumes of whizz bangs and the smell of menE
Who'd lived there years and left their curse in the denE
If not their corpsesF
There we herded from the blastG
Of whizz bangs but one found our door at lastG
Buffeting eyes and breath snuffing the candlesH
And thud flump thud down the steep steps came thumpingI
And splashing in the flood deluging muckJ
The sentry's body then his rifle handlesH
Of old Boche bombs and mud in ruck on ruckJ
We dredged him up for killed until he whinedG
O sir my eyes I'm blind I'm blind I'm blindG
Coaxing I held a flame against his lidsK
And said if he could see the least blurred lightG
He was not blind in time he'd get all rightG
I can't he sobbed Eyeballs huge bulged like squidsK
Watch my dreams still but I forgot him thereL
In posting next for duty and sending a scoutG
To beg a stretcher somewhere and floundering aboutG
To other posts under the shrieking airL
-
Those other wretches how they bled and spewedG
And one who would have drowned himself for goodG
I try not to remember these things nowM
Let dread hark back for one word only howM
Half listening to that sentry's moans and jumpsK
And the wild chattering of his broken teethN
Renewed most horribly whenever crumpsK
Pummelled the roof and slogged the air beneathN
Through the dense din I say we heard him shoutG
I see your lights But ours had long died outG
