Preface Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBBBBBCB DEFGHIJ J

This book is not about heroes English Poetry is not yet fit to speakA
of them Nor is it about deeds or lands nor anything about glory honourB
dominion or powerB
except WarB
Above all this book is not concerned with PoetryB
The subject of it is War and the pity of WarB
The Poetry is in the pityB
Yet these elegies are not to this generationC
This is in no sense consolatoryB
-
They may be to the nextD
All the poet can do to day is to warnE
That is why the true Poets must be truthfulF
If I thought the letter of this book would lastG
I might have used proper names but if the spirit of it survives PrussiaH
my ambition and those names will be content for they will haveI
achieved themselves fresher fields than FlandersJ
