Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDF GDGD DDDD HIFI JKJK LMLM JNJN JOJO PQPQ RDRDeep in a forest where the kestrel screamed | A |
Beside a lake of water clear as glass | B |
The time worn windows of a stone house gleamed | A |
Named only 'Alas ' | C |
- | |
Yet happy as the wild birds in the glades | D |
Of that green forest thridding the still air | E |
With low continued heedless serenades | D |
Its heedless people were | F |
- | |
The throbbing chords of violin and lute | G |
The lustre of lean tapers in dark eyes | D |
Fair colours beauteous flowers dainty fruit | G |
Made earth seem Paradise | D |
- | |
To them that dwelt within this lonely house | D |
Like children of the gods in lasting peace | D |
They ate sang danced as if each day's carouse | D |
Need never pause nor cease | D |
- | |
Some might cry Vanity to a weeping lyre | H |
Some in that deep pool mock their longings vain | I |
Came yet at last long silence to the wire | F |
And dark did dark remain | I |
- | |
Some to the hunt would wend with hound and horn | J |
And clash of silver beauty bravery pride | K |
Heeding not one who on white horse upborne | J |
With soundless hoofs did ride | K |
- | |
Dreamers there were who watched the hours away | L |
Beside a fountain's foam And in the sweet | M |
Of phantom evening 'neath the night bird's lay | L |
Did loved with loved one meet | M |
- | |
All all were children for the long day done | J |
They barred the heavy door 'gainst lightfoot fear | N |
And few words spake though one known face was gone | J |
Yet still seemed hovering near | N |
- | |
They heaped the bright fire higher poured dark wine | J |
And in long revelry dazed the questioning eye | O |
Curtained three fold the heart dismaying shine | J |
Of midnight streaming by | O |
- | |
They shut the dark out from the painted wall | P |
With candles dared the shadow at the door | Q |
Sang down the faint reiterated call | P |
Of those who came no more | Q |
- | |
Yet clear above that portal plain was writ | R |
Confronting each at length alone to pass | D |
Out of its beauty into night star lit | R |
That worn 'Alas ' | - |
