A Forgetful Number Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABC D DDC DEF FG HII H JKL B

Once upon a time there was a numberA
Pure and round like the sunB
But alone very much aloneC
-
It began to reckon with itselfD
-
It divided multiplied itselfD
It subtracted added itselfD
And remained always aloneC
-
It stopped reckoning with itselfD
And shut itself up in its roundE
And sunny purityF
-
Outside were left the fieryF
Traces of its reckoningG
-
They began to chase each other through the darkH
To divide when they should have multiplied themselvesI
To subtract when they should have added themselvesI
-
That's what happens in the darkH
-
And there was no one to ask itJ
To stop the tracesK
And to rub them outL
-
