What the Tramp SaidA
-
-
The old man had his box and wheelB
For grinding knives and shearsC
No doubt his bell in village streetsD
Was joy to children's earsE
And I bethought me of my youthF
When such men came aroundG
And times I asked them in quite sureH
The scissors should be groundG
The old man turned and spoke to meI
His face at last in viewJ
And then I thought those curious eyesK
Were eyes that once I knewJ
-
The moon is but an emery wheelB
To whet the sword of GodL
He said And here beside my fireM
I stretch upon the sodL
Each night and dream and watch the starsN
And watch the ghost clouds goO
And see that sword of God in HeavenP
A waving to and froO
I see that sword each century friendQ
It means the world war comesR
With all its bloody wicked chiefsS
And hate inflaming drumsR
Men talk of peace but I have seenT
That emery wheel turn roundG
The voice of Abel cries againU
To God from out the groundG
The ditches must flow red the plagueV
Go stark and screaming byW
Each time that sword of God takes edgeX
Within the midnight skyW
And those that scorned their brothers hereY
And sowed a wind of shameZ
Will reap the whirlwind as of oldA2
And face relentless flameZ
-
And thus the scissors grinder spokeB2
His face at last in viewJ
And there beside the railroad bridgeC2
I saw the wandering JewJ
