The Scissors-grinder Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: A BCDEFGHGIJKJ BLMLNOPOQRSRTGUGVWXW YZA2Z B2JC2JWhat the Tramp Said | A |
- | |
- | |
The old man had his box and wheel | B |
For grinding knives and shears | C |
No doubt his bell in village streets | D |
Was joy to children's ears | E |
And I bethought me of my youth | F |
When such men came around | G |
And times I asked them in quite sure | H |
The scissors should be ground | G |
The old man turned and spoke to me | I |
His face at last in view | J |
And then I thought those curious eyes | K |
Were eyes that once I knew | J |
- | |
The moon is but an emery wheel | B |
To whet the sword of God | L |
He said And here beside my fire | M |
I stretch upon the sod | L |
Each night and dream and watch the stars | N |
And watch the ghost clouds go | O |
And see that sword of God in Heaven | P |
A waving to and fro | O |
I see that sword each century friend | Q |
It means the world war comes | R |
With all its bloody wicked chiefs | S |
And hate inflaming drums | R |
Men talk of peace but I have seen | T |
That emery wheel turn round | G |
The voice of Abel cries again | U |
To God from out the ground | G |
The ditches must flow red the plague | V |
Go stark and screaming by | W |
Each time that sword of God takes edge | X |
Within the midnight sky | W |
And those that scorned their brothers here | Y |
And sowed a wind of shame | Z |
Will reap the whirlwind as of old | A2 |
And face relentless flame | Z |
- | |
And thus the scissors grinder spoke | B2 |
His face at last in view | J |
And there beside the railroad bridge | C2 |
I saw the wandering Jew | J |
