How different people and different animals look upon the moon showing that each creature finds in it his own mood and dispositionA
-
-
The Old Horse in the CityB
-
The moon's a peck of corn It liesC
Heaped up for me to eatD
I wish that I might climb the pathE
And taste that supper sweetD
-
Men feed me straw and scanty grainF
And beat me till I'm soreG
Some day I'll break the halter ropeH
And smash the stable doorG
-
Run down the street and mount the hillI
Just as the corn appearsJ
I've seen it rise at certain timesK
For years and years and yearsJ
-
-
What the Hyena SaidL
-
The moon is but a golden skullM
She mounts the heavens nowN
And Moon Worms mighty Moon WormsO
Are wreathed around her browN
-
The Moon Worms are a doughty raceP
They eat her gray and golden faceP
Her eye sockets dead and molding headL
These caverns are their dwelling placeP
-
The Moon Worms serpents of the skiesC
From the great hollows of her eyesC
Behold all souls and they are wiseC
With tiny keen and icy eyesC
Behold how each man sins and diesC
-
When Earth in gold corruption liesC
Long dead the moon worm butterfliesC
On cyclone wings will reach this placeP
Yea rear their brood on earth's dead faceP
-
-
What the Snow Man SaidL
-
The Moon's a snowball See the driftsQ
Of white that cross the sphereR
The Moon's a snowball melted downS
A dozen times a yearR
-
Yet rolled again in hot JulyT
When all my days are doneA
And cool to greet the weary eyeT
After the scorching sunA
-
The moon's a piece of winter fairU
Renewed the year aroundV
Behold it deathless and unstainedW
Above the grimy groundV
-
It rolls on high so brave and whiteX
Where the clear air rivers flowY
Proclaiming Christmas all the timeZ
And the glory of the snowY
-
-
What the Scare crow SaidL
-
The dim winged spirits of the nightX
Do fear and serve me wellA2
They creep from out the hedges ofB2
The garden where I dwellA2
-
I wave my arms across the walkC2
The troops obey the signD2
And bring me shimmering shadow robesE2
And cups of cowslip wineD2
-
Then dig a treasure called the moonF2
A very precious thingG2
And keep it in the air for meB
Because I am a KingG2
-
-
What Grandpa Mouse SaidL
-
The moon's a holy owl queenH2
She keeps them in a jarI2
Under her arm till eveningG2
Then sallies forth to warG
-
She pours the owls upon usJ2
They hoot with horrid noiseK2
And eat the naughty mousie girlsL2
And wicked mousie boysK2
-
So climb the moonvine every nightX
And to the owl queen prayM2
Leave good green cheese by moonlit treesN2
For her to take awayM2
-
And never squeak my childrenA
Nor gnaw the smoke house doorG
The owl queen then will love usJ2
And send her birds no moreG
-
-
The Beggar SpeaksO2
-
What Mister Moon Said to MeB
-
Come eat the bread of idlenessJ2
Come sit beside the springG2
Some of the flowers will keep awakeP2
Some of the birds will singG2
-
Come eat the bread no man has soughtQ2
For half a hundred yearsJ
Men hurry so they have no griefsJ
Nor even idle tearsJ
-
They hurry so they have no lovesJ
They cannot curse nor laughR2
Their hearts die in their youth with neitherS2
Grave nor epitaphR2
-
My bread would make them carelessJ
And never quite on timeZ
Their eyelids would be heavyB
Their fancies full of rhymeZ
-
Each soul a mystic rose treeB
Or a curious incense treeB
Come eat the bread of idlenessJ
Said Mister Moon to meB
-
-
What the Forester SaidL
-
The moon is but a candle glowY
That flickers thro' the gloomT2
The starry space a castle hallU2
And Earth the children's roomT2
Where all night long the old trees standV2
To watch the streams asleepW2
Grandmothers guarding trundle bedsJ
Good shepherds guarding sheepW2
