The Hearth Eternal Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFEGHEHIJKJLMNM DOPOQRKRSTUTVWXWYZWZ

There dwelt a widow learned and devoutA
Behind our hamlet on the eastern hillB
Three sons she had who went to find the worldC
They promised to return but wandered stillB
The cities used them well they won their wayD
Rich gifts they sent to still their mother's sighsE
Worn out with honors and apart from herF
They died as many a self made exile diesE
The mother had a hearth that would not quenchG
The deathless embers fought the creeping gloomH
She said to us who came with wondering eyesE
This is a magic fire a magic roomH
The pine burned out but still the coals glowed onI
Her grave grew old beneath the pear tree shadeJ
And yet her crumbling home enshrined the lightK
The neighbors peering in were half afraidJ
Then sturdy beggars needing fagots cameL
One at a time and stole the walls and floorM
They left a naked stone but how it blazedN
And in the thunderstorm it flared the moreM
And now it was that men were heard to sayD
This light should be beloved by all the townO
At last they made the slope a place of prayerP
Where marvellous thoughts from God came sweeping downO
They left their churches crumbling in the sunQ
They met on that soft hill one brotherhoodR
One strength and valor only one delightK
One laughing brooding genius great and goodR
Now many gray haired prodigals come homeS
The place out flames the cities of the landT
And twice born Brahmans reach us from afarU
With subtle eyes prepared to understandT
Higher and higher burns the eastern steepV
Showing the roads that march from every placeW
A steady beacon o'er the weary leaguesX
At dead of night it lights the traveller's faceW
Thus has the widow conquered half the earthY
She who increased in faith though all aloneZ
Who kept her empty house a magic placeW
Has made the town a holy angel's throneZ
