The Hearth Eternal Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFEGHEHIJKJLMNM DOPOQRKRSTUTVWXWYZWZThere dwelt a widow learned and devout | A |
Behind our hamlet on the eastern hill | B |
Three sons she had who went to find the world | C |
They promised to return but wandered still | B |
The cities used them well they won their way | D |
Rich gifts they sent to still their mother's sighs | E |
Worn out with honors and apart from her | F |
They died as many a self made exile dies | E |
The mother had a hearth that would not quench | G |
The deathless embers fought the creeping gloom | H |
She said to us who came with wondering eyes | E |
This is a magic fire a magic room | H |
The pine burned out but still the coals glowed on | I |
Her grave grew old beneath the pear tree shade | J |
And yet her crumbling home enshrined the light | K |
The neighbors peering in were half afraid | J |
Then sturdy beggars needing fagots came | L |
One at a time and stole the walls and floor | M |
They left a naked stone but how it blazed | N |
And in the thunderstorm it flared the more | M |
And now it was that men were heard to say | D |
This light should be beloved by all the town | O |
At last they made the slope a place of prayer | P |
Where marvellous thoughts from God came sweeping down | O |
They left their churches crumbling in the sun | Q |
They met on that soft hill one brotherhood | R |
One strength and valor only one delight | K |
One laughing brooding genius great and good | R |
Now many gray haired prodigals come home | S |
The place out flames the cities of the land | T |
And twice born Brahmans reach us from afar | U |
With subtle eyes prepared to understand | T |
Higher and higher burns the eastern steep | V |
Showing the roads that march from every place | W |
A steady beacon o'er the weary leagues | X |
At dead of night it lights the traveller's face | W |
Thus has the widow conquered half the earth | Y |
She who increased in faith though all alone | Z |
Who kept her empty house a magic place | W |
Has made the town a holy angel's throne | Z |
