The Gamblers Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFF GGHHIIJJKKLL IIBBMMNOPPQQ

Life's a jail where men have common lotA
Gaunt the one who has and who has notA
All our treasures neither less nor moreB
Bread alone comes thro' the guarded doorB
Cards are foolish in this jail I thinkC
Yet they play for shoes for drabs and drinkC
She my lawless sharp tongued gypsy maidD
Will not scorn with me this jail bird tradeD
Pets some fox eyed boy who turns the trickE
Tho' he win a button or a stickE
Pencil garter ribbon corset laceF
HIS the glory MINE is the disgraceF
-
Sweet I'd rather lose than win despiteG
Love of hearty words and maids politeG
Love's a gamble say you I denyH
Love's a gift I love you till I dieH
Gamblers fight like rats I will not playI
All I ever had I gave awayI
All I ever coveted was peaceJ
Such as comes if we have jail releaseJ
Cards are puzzles tho' the prize be goldK
Cards help not the bread that tastes of moldK
Cards dye not your hair to black more deepL
Cards make not the children cease to weepL
-
Scorned I sit with half shut eyes all dayI
Watch the cataract of sunshine playI
Down the wall and dance upon the floorB
Sun come down and break the dungeon doorB
Of such gold dust could I make a keyM
Turn the bolt how soon we would be freeM
Over borders we would hurry onN
Safe by sunrise farms and springs of dawnO
Wash our wounds and jail stains there at lastP
Azure rivers flowing flowing pastP
GOD HAS GREAT ESTATES JUST PAST THE LINEQ
GREEN FARMS FOR ALL AND MEAT AND CORN AND WINEQ
