Climbing the heights of BerkeleyA
Nightly I watch the WestB
There lies new San FranciscoC
Sea maid in purple dressedB
Wearing a dancer's girdleD
All to inflame desireE
Scorning her days of sackclothF
Scorning her cleansing fireE
-
See like a burning cityA
Sets now the red sun's domeG
See mystic firebrands sparkleD
There on each store and homeG
See how the golden gatewayH
Burns with the day to beA
Torch bearing fiends of portentI
Loom o'er the earth and seaA
-
Not by the earthquake dauntedJ
Nor by new fears made tameK
Painting her face and laughingL
Plays she a new found gameK
Here on her half cool cindersM
'Frisco abides in mirthF
Planning the wildest splendorE
Ever upon the earthF
-
Here on this crumbling rock ledgeN
'Frisco her all will stakeO
Blowing her bubble towersM
Swearing they will not breakO
Rearing her Fair transcendentP
Singing with piercing artQ
Calling to Ancient AsiaR
Wooing young Europe's heartQ
Here where her God has scourged herE
Wantoning singing sweetS
Waiting her mad bad loversM
Here by the judgment seatS
-
'Frisco God's doughty foemanT
Scorns and blasphemes him strongU
Tho' he again should smite herE
She would not slack her songU
Nay she would shriek and rallyA
'Frisco would ten times riseV
Not till her last tower crumblesW
Not till her last rose diesV
Not till the coast sinks seawardX
Not till the cold tides beatS
Over the high white ShastaR
'Frisco will cry defeatS
-
God loves this rebel cityA
Loves foemen brisk and gameK
Tho' just to please the angelsW
He may send down his flameK
God loves the golden leopardX
Tho' he may spoil her lairY
God smites yet loves the lionT
God makes the panther fairY
-
Dance then wild guests of 'FriscoC
Yellow bronze white and redZ
Dance by the golden gatewayH
Dance tho' he smite you deadZ
