A little colt broncho loaned to the farmA
To be broken in time without fury or harmA
Yet black crows flew past you shouting alarmA
Calling Beware with lugubrious singingB
The butterflies there in the bush were romancingB
The smell of the grass caught your soul in a tranceC
So why be a fearing the spurs and the tracesD
O broncho that would not be broken of dancingB
-
You were born with the pride of the lords great and oldenE
Who danced through the ages in corridors goldenE
In all the wide farm place the person most humanE
You spoke out so plainly with squealing and caperingB
With whinnying snorting contorting and prancingB
As you dodged your pursuers looking askanceC
With Greek footed figures and Parthenon pacesF
O broncho that would not be broken of dancingB
-
The grasshoppers cheered Keep whirling they saidG
The insolent sparrows called from the shedG
If men will not laugh make them wish they were deadG
But arch were your thoughts all malice displacingB
Though the horse killers came with snake whips advancingB
You bantered and cantered away your last chanceC
And they scourged you with Hell in their speech and their facesD
O broncho that would not be broken of dancingB
-
Nobody cares for you rattled the crowsH
As you dragged the whole reaper next day down the rowsH
The three mules held back yet you danced on your toesH
You pulled like a racer and kept the mules chasingB
You tangled the harness with bright eyes side glancingB
While the drunk driver bled you a pole for a lanceC
And the giant mules bit at you keeping their placesD
O broncho that would not be broken of dancingB
-
In that last afternoon your boyish heart brokeB
The hot wind came down like a sledge hammer strokeB
The blood sucking flies to a rare feast awokeB
And they searched out your wounds your death warrant tracingB
And the merciful men their religion enhancingB
Stopped the red reaper to give you a chanceC
Then you died on the prairie and scorned all disgracesC
O broncho that would not be broken of dancingB
