I THE DOLL UPON THE TOPMOST BOUGHA
-
-
This doll upon the topmost boughA
This playmate gift in Christmas dressB
Was taken down and brought to meC
One sleety night most comfortlessB
-
Her hair was gold her dolly sashD
Was gray brocade most good to seeB
The dear toy laughed and I forgotE
The ill the new year promised meB
-
-
II ON SUDDENLY RECEIVING A CURL LONG REFUSEDF
-
Oh saucy gold circle of fairyland silkG
Impudent intimate delicate treasureH
A noose for my heart and a ring for my fingerH
Here in my study you sing me a measureH
-
Whimsy and song in my little gray studyB
Words out of wonderland praising her finenessB
Touched with her pulsating delicate laughterH
Saying The girl is all daring and kindnessB
-
Saying Her soul is all feminine gamenessB
Trusting her insights ardent for livingI
She would be weeping with me and be laughingI
A thoroughbred joyous receiving and givingI
-

III ON RECEIVING ONE OF GLORIANA'S LETTERSB
-
Your pen needs but a ruffleJ
To be Pavlova whirlingI
It surely is a scalawagI
A scamping down the pageK
A pretty little May windL
The morning buds uncurlingI
And then the white sweet RussianM
The dancer of the ageK
-
Your pen's the Queen of ShebaN
Such serious questions bringingI
That merry rascal SolomonM
Would show a sober faceB
And then again PavlovaO
To set our spirits singingI
The snowy swan bacchanteL
All glamour glee and graceB
-
-
IV IN PRAISE OF GLORIANA'S REMARKABLE GOLDEN HAIRP
-
The gleaming head of one fine friendL
Is bent above my little songI
So through the treasure pits of HeavenM
In fancy's shoes I march alongI
-
I wander seek and peer and ponderH
In Splendor's last ensnaring lairP
'Mid burnished harps and burnished crownsB
Where noble chariots gleam and flareP
-
Amid the spirit coins and gemsB
The plates and cups and helms of fireH
The gorgeous treasure pits of HeavenM
Where angel misers slake desireH
-
O endless treasure pits of goldL
Where silly angel men make mirthQ
I think that I am there this hourH
Though walking in the ways of earthQ
