I THE LIONA
-
The Lion is a kingly beastB
He likes a Hindu for a feastB
And if no Hindu he can getC
The lion family is upsetC
-
He cuffs his wife and bites her earsD
Till she is nearly moved to tearsE
Then some explorer finds the denF
And all is family peace againF
-

III THE DANGEROUS LITTLE BOY FAIRIESJ
-
In fairyland the little boysK
Would rather fight than eat their mealsL
They like to chase a gauze winged flyM
And catch and beat him till he squealsL
Sometimes they come to sleeping menF
Armed with the deadly red rose thornN
And those that feel its fearful woundO
Repent the day that they were bornN

IV THE MOUSE THAT GNAWED THE OAK TREE DOWNP
-
The mouse that gnawed the oak tree downP
Began his task in early lifeQ
He kept so busy with his teethR
He had no time to take a wifeQ
-
He gnawed and gnawed through sun and rainS
When the ambitious fit was onT
Then rested in the sawdust tillU
A month of idleness had goneV
-
He did not move about to huntW
The coteries of mousie menF
He was a snail paced stupid thingX
Until he cared to gnaw againF
-
The mouse that gnawed the oak tree downP
When that tough foe was at his feetY
Found in the stump no angel cakeZ
Nor buttered bread nor cheese nor meatY
The forest roof let in the skyM
This light is worth the work said heA2
I'll make this ancient swamp more lightB2
And started on another treeA2

Where does Cinderella sleepC2
By far off day dream riverG
A secret place her burning PrinceD2

Homesick for our cinder worldE2

We for the day dream riverG

VI THE SPIDER AND THE GHOST OF THE FLYM
-
Once I loved a spiderG
When I was born a flyM
A velvet footed spiderG
With a gown of rainbow dyeM
She ate my wings and gloatedF2
She bound me with a hairG2
-
She drove me to her parlorG
Above her winding stairG2
To educate young spidersH2
She took me all apartI2
My ghost came back to haunt herG
I saw her eat my heartI2

VII CRICKETS ON A STRIKEJ2
-
The foolish queen of fairylandK2
From her milk white throne in a lily bellL2
Gave command to her cricket bandK2
To play for her when the dew drops fellL2
-
But the cold dew spoiled their instrumentsM2
And they play for the foolish queen no moreN2
Instead those sturdy malcontentsO2
Play sharps and flats in my kitchen floorN2
