Rhyme Scheme: A A BCBCBC BCBCDC ACDCEC ECCCFC GCBCBC

Dedicated to Lucy BatesA
-
Being a reminiscence of certain private theatricalsA
-
-
Oh cabaret dancer I know a dancerB
Whose eyes have not looked on the feasts that are vainC
I know a dancer I know a dancerB
Whose soul has no bond with the beasts of the plainC
Judith the dancer Judith the dancerB
With foot like the snow and with step like the rainC
-
Oh thrice painted dancer vaudeville dancerB
Sad in your spangles with soul all astrainC
I know a dancer I know a dancerB
Whose laughter and weeping are spiritual gainC
A pure hearted high hearted maiden evangelD
With strength the dark cynical earth to disdainC
-
Flowers of bright Broadway you of the chorusA
Who sing in the hope of forgetting your painC
I turn to a sister of Sainted CeciliaD
A white bird escaping the earth's tangled skeinC
The music of God is her innermost broodingE
The whispering angels her footsteps sustainC
-
Oh proud Russian dancer praise for your dancingE
No clean human passion my rhyme would arraignC
You dance for Apollo with noble devotionC
A high cleansing revel to make the heart saneC
But Judith the dancer prays to a spiritF
More white than Apollo and all of his trainC
-
I know a dancer who finds the true GodheadG
Who bends o'er a brazier in Heaven's clear plainC
I know a dancer I know a dancerB
Who lifts us toward peace from this earth that is vainC
Judith the dancer Judith the dancerB
With foot like the snow and with step like the rainC
