Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CBCB DBDB EFEFOn this my pensive pillow gentle Sleep | A |
Descend in all thy downy plumage drest | B |
Wipe with thy wing these eyes that wake to weep | A |
And place thy crown of poppies on my breast | B |
- | |
O steep my senses in oblivion's balm | C |
And sooth my throbbing pulse with lenient hand | B |
This tempest of my boiling blood becalm | C |
Despair grows mild at thy supreme command | B |
- | |
Yet ah in vain familiar with the gloom | D |
And sadly toiling through the tedious night | B |
I seek sweet slumber while that virgin bloom | D |
For ever hovering haunts my wretched sight | B |
- | |
Nor would the dawning day my sorrows charm | E |
Black midnight and the blaze of noon alike | F |
To me appear while with uplifted arm | E |
Death stands prepar'd but still delays to strike | F |
