To Cara, After An Interval Of Absence Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FGFG HIHI JKJK LMLM NONO PQPQ RERE STSU

Concealed within the shady woodA
A mother left her sleeping childB
And flew to cull her rustic foodC
The fruitage of the forest wildB
-
But storms upon her pathway riseD
The mother roams astray and weepingE
Far from the weak appealing criesD
Of him she left so sweetly sleepingE
-
She hopes she fears a light is seenF
And gentler blows the night wind's breathG
Yet no 'tis gone the storms are keenF
The infant may be chilled to deathG
-
Perhaps even now in darkness shroudedH
His little eyes lie cold and stillI
And yet perhaps they are not cloudedH
Life and love may light them stillI
-
Thus Cara at our last farewellJ
When fearful even thy hand to touchK
I mutely asked those eyes to tellJ
If parting pained thee half so muchK
-
I thought and oh forgive the thoughtL
For none was e'er by love inspiredM
Whom fancy had not also taughtL
To hope the bliss his soul desiredM
-
Yes I did think in Cara's mindN
Though yet to that sweet mind unknownO
I left one infant wish behindN
One feeling which I called my ownO
-
Oh blest though but in fancy blestP
How did I ask of Pity's careQ
To shield and strengthen in thy breastP
The nursling I had cradled thereQ
-
And many an hour beguiled by pleasureR
And many an hour of sorrow numberingE
I ne'er forgot the new born treasureR
I left within thy bosom slumberingE
-
Perhaps indifference has not chilled itS
Haply it yet a throb may giveT
Yet no perhaps a doubt has killed itS
Say dearest does the feeling liveU
