TOA
-
THE MORNING OF HER BIRTHDAYB
-
-
In witching slumbers of the nightC
I dreamt I was the airy spriteC
That on thy natal moment smiledD
And thought I wafted on my wingE
Those flowers which in Elysium springE
To crown my lovely mortal childD
-
With olive branch I bound thy headF
Heart's ease along thy path I shedF
Which was to bloom through all thy yearsG
Nor yet did I forget to bindH
Love's roses with his myrtle twinedH
And dewed by sympathetic tearsI
-
Such was the wild but precious boonJ
Which Fancy at her magic noonJ
Bade me to Nona's image payB
And were it thus my fate to beK
Thy little guardian deityK
How blest around thy steps I'd playB
-
Thy life should glide in peace alongL
Calm as some lonely shepherd's songL
That's heard at distance in the groveM
No cloud should ever dim thy skyN
No thorns along thy pathway lieN
But all be beauty peace and loveO
-
Indulgent Time should never bringE
To thee one blight upon his wingE
So gently o'er thy brow he'd flyN
And death itself should but be feltP
Like that of daybeams when they meltP
Bright to the last in evening's skyN
