Oh thou of all creation blestB
Sweet insect that delight'st to restB
Upon the wild wood's leafy topsC
To drink the dew that morning dropsC
And chirp thy song with such a gleeD
That happiest kings may envy theeD
Whatever decks the velvet fieldE
Whate'er the circling seasons yieldE
Whatever buds whatever blowsF
For thee it buds for thee it growsF
Nor yet art thou the peasant's fearG
To him thy friendly notes are dearG
For thou art mild as matin dewH
And still when summer's flowery hueH
Begins to paint the bloomy plainI
We hear thy sweet prophetic strainI
Thy sweet prophetic strain we hearJ
And bless the notes and thee revereG
The Muses love thy shrilly toneK
Apollo calls thee all his ownK
'Twas he who gave that voice to theeD
'Tis he who tunes thy minstrelsyF
-
Unworn by age's dim declineL
The fadeless blooms of youth are thineL
Melodious insect child of earthM
In wisdom mirthful wise in mirthM
Exempt from every weak decayN
That withers vulgar frames awayN
With not a drop of blood to stainI
The current of thy purer veinI
So blest an age is past by theeD
Thou seem'st a little deityD
