FROM THE SAME TO THE SAMEA
-
MemphisB
-
-
There is some star or may it beC
That moon we saw so near last nightD
Which comes athwart my destinyC
For ever with misleading lightD
If for a moment pure and wiseE
And calm I feel there quick doth fallF
A spark from some disturbing eyesE
That thro' my heart soul being fliesE
And makes a wildfire of it allF
I've seen oh Cleon that this earthG
Should e'er have given such beauty birthG
That man but hold hear all that pastH
Since yester night from first to lastH
-
The rising of the Moon calm slowI
And beautiful as if she cameA
Fresh from the Elysian bowers belowI
Was with a loud and sweet acclaimA
Welcomed from every breezy heightD
Where crowds stood waiting for her lightD
And well might they who viewed the sceneJ
Then lit up all around them sayK
That never yet had Nature beenL
Caught sleeping in a lovelier rayK
Or rivalled her own noontide faceM
With purer show of moonlight graceM
-
Memphis still grand tho' not the sameA
Unrivalled Memphis that could seizeN
From ancient Thebes the crown of FameA
And wear it bright thro' centuriesN
Now in the moonshine that came downO
Like a last smile upon that crownO
Memphis still grand among her lakesP
Her pyramids and shrines of fireQ
Rose like a vision that half breaksP
On one who dreaming still awakesP
To music from some midnight choirQ
While to the west where gradual sinksP
In the red sands from Libya rolledR
Some mighty column or fair sphynxP
That stood in kingly courts of oldR
It seemed as mid the pomps that shoneS
Thus gayly round him Time looked onT
Waiting till all now bright and blestU
Should sink beneath him like the restU
-
No sooner had the setting sunV
Proclaimed the festal rite begunV
And mid their idol's fullest beamsP
The Egyptian world was all afloatW
Than I who live upon these streamsP
Like a young Nile bird turned my boatW
To the fair island on whose shoresP
Thro' leafy palms and sycamoresP
Already shone the moving lightsP
Of pilgrims hastening to the ritesP
While far around like ruby sparksP
Upon the water lighted barksP
Of every form and kind from thoseP
That down Syene's cataract shootsP
To the grand gilded barge that rowsP
To tambour's beat and breath of flutesP
And wears at night in words of flameA
On the rich prow its master's nameA
All were alive and made this seaP
Of cities busy as a hillX
Of summer ants caught suddenlyP
In the overflowing of a rillX
-
Landed upon the isle I soonY
Thro' marble alleys and small grovesP
Of that mysterious palm she lovesP
Reached the fair Temple of the MoonY
And there as slowly thro' the lastH
Dim lighted vestibule I pastH
Between the porphyry pillars twinedZ
With palm and ivy I could seeP
A band of youthful maidens windZ
In measured walk half dancinglyX
Round a small shrine on which was placedA2
That bird whose plumes of black and whiteD
Wear in their hue by Nature tracedA2
A type of the moon's shadowed lightD
-
In drapery like woven snowI
These nymphs were clad and each belowI
The rounded bosom loosely woreB2
A dark blue zone or bandeletD
With little silver stars all o'erQ
As are the skies at midnight setD
While in their tresses braided thro'Q
Sparkled that flower of Egypt's lakesP
The silvery lotus in whose hueC2
As much delight the young Moon takesP
As doth the Day God to beholdD
The lofty bean flower's buds of goldD
And as they gracefully went roundD
The worshipt bird some to the beatD
Of castanets some to the soundD
Of the shrill sistrum timed their feetD
While others at each step they tookD2
A tinkling chain of silver shookD2
-
They seemed all fair but there was oneV
On whom the light had not yet shoneS
Or shone but partly so downcastD
She held her brow as slow she pastD
And yet to me there seemed to dwellX
A charm about that unseen faceP
A something in the shade that fellX
Over that brow's imagined graceP
Which won me more than all the bestD
Outshining beauties of the restD
And her alone my eyes could seeP
Enchained by this sweet mysteryP
And her alone I watched as roundD
She glided o'er that marble groundD
Stirring not more the unconscious airQ
Than if a Spirit were moving thereQ
Till suddenly wide open flewC2
The Temple's folding gates and threwC2
A splendor from within a floodD
Of glory where these maidens stoodD
While with that light as if the sameA
Rich source gave birth to both there cameA
A swell of harmony as grandD
As e'er was born of voice and bandD
Filling the gorgeous aisles aroundD
With luxury of light and soundD
-
Then was it by the flash that blazedD
Full o'er her features oh 'twas thenE2
As startingly her eyes she raisedD
But quick let fall their lids againE2
I saw not Psyche's self when firstD
Upon the threshold of the skiesP
She paused while heaven's glory burstD
Newly upon her downcast eyesP
Could look more beautiful or blushF2
With holier shame than did this maidD
Whom now I saw in all that gushF2
Of splendor from the aisles displayedD
Never tho' well thou know'st how muchG2
I've felt the sway of Beauty's starQ
Never did her bright influence touchG2
My soul into its depths so farQ
And had that vision lingered thereQ
One minute more I should have flownS
Forgetful who I was and whereQ
And at her feet in worship thrownS
Proffered my soul thro' life her ownS
-
But scarcely had that burst of lightD
And music broke on ear and sightD
Than up the aisle the bird took wingH2
As if on heavenly mission sentD
While after him with graceful springH2
Like some unearthly creatures meantD
To live in that mixt elementD
Of light and song the young maids wentD
And she who in my heart had thrownS
A spark to burn for life was flownS
-
In vain I tried to follow bandsP
Of reverend chanters filled the aisleX
Where'er I sought to pass their wandsP
Motioned me back while many a fileX
Of sacred nymphs but ah not theyK
Whom my eyes looked for thronged the wayK
Perplext impatient mid this crowdD
Of faces lights the o'erwhelming cloudD
Of incense round me and my bloodD
Full of its new born fire I stoodD
Nor moved nor breathed but when I caughtD
A glimpse of some blue spangled zoneS
Or wreath of lotus which I thoughtD
Like those she wore at distance shoneS
-
But no 'twas vain hour after hourQ
Till my heart's throbbing turned to painI2
And my strained eyesight lost its powerQ
I sought her thus but all in vainI2
At length hot wildered in despairQ
I rushed into the cool night airQ
And hurrying tho' with many a lookD2
Back to the busy Temple tookD2
My way along the moonlight shoreQ
And sprung into my boat once moreQ
There is a Lake that to the northJ2
Of Memphis stretches grandly forthJ2
Upon whose silent shore the DeadD
Have a proud city of their ownS
With shrines and pyramids o'erspreadD
Where many an ancient kingly headD
Slumbers immortalized in stoneS
And where thro' marble grots beneathK2
The lifeless ranged like sacred thingsP
Nor wanting aught of life but breathL2
Lie in their painted coveringsP
And on each new successive raceP
That visit their dim haunts belowI
Look with the same unwithering faceP
They wore three thousand years agoI
-
There Silence thoughtful God who lovesP
The neighborhood of death in grovesP
Of asphodel lies hid and weavesP
His hushing spell among the leavesP
Nor ever noise disturbs the airQ
Save the low humming mournful soundD
Of priests within their shrines at prayerQ
For the fresh Dead entombed aroundD
-
'Twas toward this place of death in moodD
Made up of thoughts half bright half darkM2
I now across the shining floodD
Unconscious turned my light winged barkM2
The form of that young maid in allX
Its beauty was before me stillX
And oft I thought if thus to callX
Her image to my mind at willX
If but the memory of that oneV
Bright look of hers for ever goneN2
Was to my heart worth all the restD
Of woman kind beheld possestD
What would it be if wholly mineO2
Within these arms as in a shrineO2
Hallowed by Love I saw her shineO2
An idol worshipt by the lightD
Of her own beauties day and nightD
If 'twas a blessing but to seeP
And lose again what would this beP
-
In thoughts like these but often crostD
By darker threads my mind was lostD
Till near that City of the DeadD
Waked from my trance I saw o'erheadD
As if by some enchanter bidD
Suddenly from the wave to riseP
Pyramid over pyramidD
Tower in succession to the skiesP
While one aspiring as if soonY
'Twould touch the heavens rose over allX
And on its summit the white moonY
Rested as on a pedestalX
-
The silence of the lonely tombsP
And temples round where naught was heardD
But the high palm tree's tufted plumesP
Shaken at times by breeze or birdD
Formed a deep contrast to the sceneJ
Of revel where I late had beenL
To those gay sounds that still came o'erQ
Faintly from many a distant shoreQ
And the unnumbered lights that shoneS
Far o'er the flood from Memphis onT
To the Moon's Isle and BabylonT
-
My oars were lifted and my boatD
Lay rocked upon the rippling streamP2
While my vague thoughts alike afloatD
Drifted thro' many an idle dreamP2
With all of which wild and unfixtD
As was their aim that vision mixtD
That bright nymph of the Temple nowQ2
With the same innocence of browQ2
She wore within the lighted faneI2
Now kindling thro' each pulse and veinI2
With passion of such deep felt fireQ
As Gods might glory to inspireQ
And now oh Darkness of the tombR2
That must eclipse even light like hersP
Cold dead and blackening mid the gloomR2
Of those eternal sepulchresP
-
Scarce had I turned my eyes awayK
From that dark death place at the thoughtD
When by the sound of dashing sprayK
From a light oar my ear was caughtD
While past me thro' the moonlight sailedD
A little gilded bark that boreQ
Two female figures closely veiledD
And mantled towards that funeral shoreQ
They landed and the boat againE2
Put off across the watery plainI2
-
Shall I confess to thee I mayK
That never yet hath come the chanceP
Of a new music a new rayK
From woman's voice from woman's glanceP
Which let it find me how it mightD
In joy or grief I did not blessP
And wander after as a lightD
Leading to undreamt happinessP
And chiefly now when hopes so vainI2
Were stirring in my heart and brainI2
When Fancy had allured my soulX
Into a chase as vague and farQ
As would be his who fixt his goalX
In the horizon or some starQ
Any bewilderment that broughtD
More near to earth my high flown thoughtD
The faintest glimpse of joy less pureQ
Less high and heavenly but more sureQ
Came welcome and was then to meP
What the first flowery isle must beP
To vagrant birds blown out to seaP
-
Quick to the shore I urged my barkM2
And by the bursts of moonlight shedD
Between the lofty tombs could markM2
Those figures as with hasty treadD
They glided on till in the shadeD
Of a small pyramid which thro'Q
Some boughs of palm its peak displayedD
They vanisht instant from my viewC2
-
I hurried to the spot no traceP
Of life was in that lonely placeP
And had the creed I hold by taughtD
Of other worlds I might have thoughtD
Some mocking spirits had from thenceP
Come in this guise to cheat my senseP
-
At length exploring darkly roundD
The Pyramid's smooth sides I foundD
An iron portal opening highS2
'Twixt peak and base and with a prayerQ
To the bliss loving Moon whose eyeS2
Alone beheld me sprung in thereQ
Downward the narrow stairway ledD
Thro' many a duct obscure and dreadD
A labyrinth for mystery madeD
With wanderings onward backward roundD
And gathering still where'er it woundD
But deeper density of shadeD
-
Scarce had I asked myself Can aughtD
That man delights in sojourn hereQ
When suddenly far off I caughtD
A glimpse of light remote but clearQ
Whose welcome glimmer seemed to pourQ
From some alcove or cell that endedD
The long steep marble corridorQ
Thro' which I now all hope descendedD
Never did Spartan to his brideD
With warier foot at midnight glideD
It seemed as echo's self were deadD
In this dark place so mute my treadD
Reaching at length that light I sawP
Oh listen to the scene now raisedD
Before my eyes then guess the aweT2
The still rapt awe with which I gazedD
-
'Twas a small chapel lined aroundD
With the fair spangling marble foundD
In many a ruined shrine that standsP
Half seen above the Libyan sandsP
The walls were richly sculptured o'erQ
And charactered with that dark loreQ
Of times before the Flood whose keyP
Was lost in the Universal SeaP
While on the roof was pictured brightD
The Theban beetle as he shinesP
When the Nile's mighty flow declinesP
And forth the creature springs to lightD
With life regenerate in his wingsP
Emblem of vain imaginingsP
Of a new world when this is goneN2
In which the spirit still lives onT
-
Direct beneath this type reclinedD
On a black granite altar layK
A female form in crystal shrinedD
And looking fresh as if the rayK
Of soul had fled but yesterdayK
While in relief of silvery hueC2
Graved on the altar's front were seenJ
A branch of lotus broken in twoC2
As that fair creature's life had beenL
And a small bird that from its sprayK
Was winging like her soul awayK
-
But brief the glimpse I now could spareQ
To the wild mystic wonders roundD
For there was yet one wonder thereQ
That held me as by witchery boundD
The lamp that thro' the chamber shedD
Its vivid beam was at the headD
Of her who on that altar sleptD
And near it stood when first I cameA
Bending her brow as if she keptD
Sad watch upon its silent flameA
A female form as yet so placedD
Between the lamp's strong glow and meP
That I but saw in outline tracedD
The shadow of her symmetryP
Yet did my heart I scarce knew whyS2
Even at that shadowed shape beat highS2
Nor was it long ere full in sightD
The figure turned and by the lightD
That touched her features as she bentD
Over the crystal monumentD
I saw 'twas she the same the sameA
That lately stood before me brighteningH2
The holy spot where she but cameA
And went again like summer lightningH2
-
Upon the crystal o'er the breastD
Of her who took that silent restD
There was a cross of silver lyingH2
Another type of that blest homeU2
Which hope and pride and fear of dyingH2
Build for us in a world to comeV2
This silver cross the maiden raisedD
To her pure lips then having gazedD
Some minutes on that tranquil faceP
Sleeping in all death's mournful graceP
Upward she turned her brow sereneJ
As if intent on heaven those eyesP
Saw them nor roof nor cloud betweenJ
Their own pure orbits and the skiesP
And tho' her lips no motion madeD
And that fixt look was all her speechW2
I saw that the rapt spirit prayedD
Deeper within than words could reachW2
-
Strange power of Innocence to turnX2
To its own hue whate'er comes nearQ
And make even vagrant Passion burnX2
With purer warmth within its sphereQ
She who but one short hour beforeQ
Had come like sudden wild fire o'erQ
My heart and brain whom gladly evenL
From that bright Temple in the faceP
Of those proud ministers of heavenV
I would have borne in wild embraceP
And risked all punishment divineO2
And human but to make her mineO2
She she was now before me thrownS
By fate itself into my armsP
There standing beautiful aloneS
With naught to guard her but her charmsP
Yet did I then did even a breathL2
From my parched lips too parched to moveY2
Disturb a scene where thus beneathK2
Earth's silent covering Youth and DeathL2
Held converse thro' undying loveZ2
No smile and taunt me as thou wiltD
Tho' but to gaze thus was delightD
Yet seemed it like a wrong a guiltD
To win by stealth so pure a sightD
And rather than a look profaneI2
Should then have met those thoughtful eyesP
Or voice or whisper broke the chainI2
That linked her spirit with the skiesP
I would have gladly in that placeP
From which I watched her heavenward faceP
Let my heart break without one beatD
That could disturb a prayer so sweetD
Gently as if on every treadD
My life my more than life dependedD
Back thro' the corridor that ledD
To this blest scene I now ascendedD
And with slow seeking and some painI2
And many a winding tried in vainI2
Emerged to upper earth againE2
-
The sun had freshly risen and downO
The marble hills of ArabyP
Scattered as from a conqueror's crownO
His beams into that living seaP
There seemed a glory in his lightD
Newly put on as if for prideD
Of the high homage paid this nightD
To his own Isis his young brideD
Now fading feminine awayK
In her proud Lord's superior rayK
-
My mind's first impulse was to flyS2
At once from this entangling netD
New scenes to range new loves to tryS2
Or in mirth wine and luxuryP
Of every sense that might forgetD
But vain the effort spell bound stillX
I lingered without power or willX
To turn my eyes from that dark doorQ
Which now enclosed her 'mong the deadD
Oft fancying thro' the boughs that o'erQ
The sunny pile their flickering shedD
'Twas her light form again I sawP
Starting to earth still pure and brightD
But wakening as I hoped less aweT2
Thus seen by morning's natural lightD
Than in that strange dim cell at nightD
-
But no alas she ne'er returnedD
Nor yet tho' still I watch nor yetD
Tho' the red sun for hours hath burnedD
And now in his mid course hath metD
The peak of that eternal pileX
He pauses still at noon to blessP
Standing beneath his downward smileX
Like a great Spirit shadowlessP
Nor yet she comes while here aloneS
Sauntering thro' this death peopled placeP
Where no heart beats except my ownS
Or 'neath a palm tree's shelter thrownS
By turns I watch and rest and traceP
These lines that are to waft to theeP
My last night's wondrous historyP
-
Dost thou remember in that IsleX
Of our own Sea where thou and IS2
Lingered so long so happy a whileX
Till all the summer flowers went byS2
How gay it was when sunset broughtD
To the cool Well our favorite maidsP
Some we had won and some we soughtD
To dance within the fragrant shadesP
And till the stars went down attuneY
Their Fountain Hymns to the young moonY
-
That time too oh 'tis like a dreamP2
When from Scamander's holy tideD
I sprung as Genius of the StreamP2
And bore away that blooming brideD
Who thither came to yield her charmsP
As Phrygian maids are wont ere wedD
Into the cold Scamander's armsP
But met and welcomed mine insteadD
Wondering as on my neck she fellX
How river gods could love so wellX
Who would have thought that he who rovedD
Like the first bees of summer thenE2
Rifling each sweet nor ever lovedD
But the free hearts that loved againE2
Readily as the reed repliesP
To the least breath that round it sighsP
Is the same dreamer who last nightD
Stood awed and breathless at the sightD
Of one Egyptian girl and nowQ2
Wanders among these tombs with browQ2
Pale watchful sad as tho' he justD
Himself had risen from out their dustD
-
Yet so it is and the same thirstD
For something high and pure aboveZ2
This withering world which from the firstD
Made me drink deep of woman's loveZ2
As the one joy to heaven most nearQ
Of all our hearts can meet with hereQ
Still burns me up still keeps awakeA3
A fever naught but death can slakeA3
-
Farewell whatever may befallX
Or bright or dark thou'lt know it allX
