Southey high placed on the contested throneA
Of modern verse a Muse herself unknownA
Sues that her tears may consecrate the strainsB
Pour'd o'er the urn enrich'd with WHITE'S RemainsB
While touch'd to transport Taste's responding toneA
Makes the rapt poet's ecstasies thine ownA
Ah think that he whose hand supremely skill'dC
The heart's fine chords with deep vibration thrill'dC
In stagnant silence and petrific gloomD
Unconscious sleeps the tenant of the tombD
Extinct that spirit whose strong bidding drewE
From Fancy's confines Wonder's wild eyed crewE
Which bade Despair's terrific phantoms passF
Like Macbeth's monarchs in the mystic glassF
Before the youthful bard's impassion'd eyeG
Like him led on to triumph and to dieG
Like him by mighty magic compass'd roundH
And seeking sceptres on enchanted groundH
Such spells invest such blear illusion waitsI
The trav'ller bound for Fame's receding gatesI
Delusive splendours gild the proud abodeJ
But lurking demons haunt th' alluring roadJ
There gaunt eyed Want asserts her iron reignK
There as in vengeance of the world's disdainK
This half flesh'd hag midst Wit's bright blossoms stalksL
And breathing winter withers where she walksL
Though there long outlaw'd desp'rate with disgraceM
Invidious Dulness wields the critic maceM
And sworn in hate exerts his ruffian mightN
Where'er young genius meditates his flightN
Erewhile when WHITE by this fell fiend oppress'dO
Felt Hope's fine fervours languish in his breastO
When shrunk with scorn and trembling to aspireP
He dropp'd desponding his insulted lyreP
Alert in zeal with art benigh enduedQ
SOUTHEY thy hand his blasted strength renew'dQ
And lured him on his labours scarce begunR
To win those laurels which thyself had wonR
In vain though vivified with pristine forceS
O'er learning's realms he shot with meteor courseS
To worth relentless Fate's despotic frownT
Scowl'd in the bright perspective of renownT
Timeless he falls in Death's pale triumph ledU
And his first laurels shade his grassy bedU
So sinks the Muse's offspring doom'd to tryG
Like a caged eagle panting tow'rds the skyG
A foil'd ascent while adverse fortune flingsV
Her strong link'd meshes o'er his flutt'ring wingsV
Sinks while exalted Ignorance supineW
Unheeded slumbers like the pamper'd swineW
Obsequious slaves in his voluptuous bowersX
Young pleasures warble while the dancing HoursX
In sickly sweetness languishingly moveY
Like new waked virgins flush'd with dreams of loveZ
Him when by Death's dark angel swept awayA2
From sloth's embrace in premature decayA2
Surviving friends donation'd into griefB2
Shall mourn with anguish audible and briefB2
And pander bards ring round in goodly chimeC2
His liberal heart high wit and soul sublimeC2
But Flattery's frauds impartial Time disownsX
Funereal pomp and adulative tonesX
Slow where she moves through monumental aislesX
With stern contempt insulted Reason smilesX
While Falsehood shrined above th' emblazon'd pallsX
Shames sanctity from consecrated wallsX
She seeks with pensive step and saintly eyesX
Some lonely grave where rude the grass tufts riseX
Nor sculptured angels tell nor chisell'd linesX
There slumbers CHATTERTON here WHITE reclinesX
But nobler triumphs WHITE'S probation claimsX
Than ever blazon'd Wit's recorded namesX
For Virtue's sons to bliss immortal bornD2
Tower to their native heaven and view with scornD2
The vain distinction of the trophied sodE2
'Tis theirs to gain distinction with their GodE2
