Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCAAAADDAAEEFFGG AAHHIIJJEEKKKKAAEEKK KKAALLMMAAENOOPPEEKK AAQQ K KKGGAARRKKMMSSAADDAA PPKKAATTUUAAKKAAMMVVRecite the loves of Narva and Mored | A |
The priest of Chalma's triple idol said | A |
High from the ground the youthful warriors sprung | B |
Loud on the concave shell the lances rung | B |
In all the mystic mazes of the dance | C |
The youths of Banny's burning sands advance | C |
Whilst the soft virgin panting looks behind | A |
And rides upon the pinions of the wind | A |
Ascends the mountain's brow and measures round | A |
The steepy cliffs of Chalma's sacred ground | A |
Chalma the god whose noisy thunders fly | D |
Thro' the dark covering of the midnight sky | D |
Whose arm directs the close embattled host | A |
And sinks the labouring vessels on the coast | A |
Chalma whose excellence is known from far | E |
From Lupa's rocky hill to Calabar | E |
The guardian god of Afric and the isles | F |
Where nature in her strongest vigour smiles | F |
Where the blue blossom of the forky thorn | G |
Bends with the nectar of the op'ning morn | G |
Where ginger's aromatic matted root | A |
Creep through the mead and up the mountains shoot | A |
Three times the virgin swimming on the breeze | H |
Danc'd in the shadow of the mystic trees | H |
When like a dark cloud spreading to the view | I |
The first born sons of war and blood pursue | I |
Swift as the elk they pour along the plain | J |
Swift as the flying clouds distilling rain | J |
Swift as the boundings of the youthful row | E |
They course around and lengthen as they go | E |
Like the long chain of rocks whose summits rise | K |
Far in the sacred regions of the skies | K |
Upon whose top the black'ning tempest lours | K |
Whilst down its side the gushing torrent pours | K |
Like the long cliffy mountains which extend | A |
From Lorbar's cave to where the nations end | A |
Which sink in darkness thick'ning and obscure | E |
Impenetrable mystic and impure | E |
The flying terrors of the war advance | K |
And round the sacred oak repeat the dance | K |
Furious they twist around the gloomy trees | K |
Like leaves in autumn twirling with the breeze | K |
So when the splendor of the dying day | A |
Darts the red lustre of the watery way | A |
Sudden beneath Toddida's whistling brink | L |
The circling billows in wild eddies sink | L |
Whirl furious round and the loud bursting wave | M |
Sinks down to Chalma's sacerdotal cave | M |
Explores the palaces on Zira's coast | A |
Where howls the war song of the chieftain's ghost | A |
Where the artificer in realms below | E |
Gilds the rich lance or beautifies the bow | N |
From the young palm tree spins the useful twine | O |
Or makes the teeth of elephants divine | O |
Where the pale children of the feeble sun | P |
In search of gold thro' every climate run | P |
From burning heat to freezing torments go | E |
And live in all vicissitudes of woe | E |
Like the loud eddies of Toddida's sea | K |
The warriors circle the mysterious tree | K |
'Till spent with exercise they spread around | A |
Upon the op'ning blossoms of the ground | A |
The priestess rising sings the sacred tale | Q |
And the loud chorus echoes thro' the dale | Q |
- | |
Priestess | K |
- | |
Far from the burning sands of Calabar | K |
Far from the lustre of the morning star | K |
Far from the pleasure of the holy morn | G |
Far from the blessedness of Chalma's horn | G |
Now rests the souls of Narva and Mored | A |
Laid in the dust and number'd with the dead | A |
Dear are their memories to us and long | R |
Long shall their attributes be known in song | R |
Their lives were transient as the meadow flow'r | K |
Ripen'd in ages wither'd in an hour | K |
Chalma reward them in his gloomy cave | M |
And open all the prisons of the grave | M |
Bred to the service of the godhead's throne | S |
And living but to serve his God alone | S |
Narva was beauteous as the opening day | A |
When on the spangling waves the sunbeams play | A |
When the mackaw ascending to the sky | D |
Views the bright splendour with a steady eye | D |
Tall as the house of Chalma's dark retreat | A |
Compact and firm as Rhadal Ynca's fleet | A |
Completely beauteous as a summer's sun | P |
Was Narva by his excellence undone | P |
Where the soft Togla creeps along the meads | K |
Thro' scented Calamus and fragrant reeds | K |
Where the sweet Zinsa spreads its matted bed | A |
Liv'd the still sweeter flower the young Mored | A |
Black was her face as Togla's hidden cell | T |
Soft as the moss where hissing adders dwell | T |
As to the sacred court she brought a fawn | U |
The sportive tenant of the spicy lawn | U |
She saw and loved and Narva too forgot | A |
His sacred vestment and his mystic lot | A |
Long had the mutual sigh the mutual tear | K |
Burst from the breast and scorn'd confinement there | K |
Existence was a torment O my breast | A |
Can I find accents to unfold the rest | A |
Lock'd in each others arms from Hyga's cave | M |
They plung'd relentless to a wat'ry grave | M |
And falling murmured to the powers above | V |
Gods take our lives unless we live to love | V |
