ROSABELLEA
-
O listen listen ladies gayB
No haughty feat of arms I tellC
Soft is the note and sad the layB
That mourns the lovely RosabelleA
-
Moor moor the barge ye gallant crewD
And gentle ladye deign to stayB
Rest thee in Castle RavensheuchE
Nor tempt the stormy firth to dayB
-
The blackening wave is edg'd with whiteF
To inch and rock the sea mews flyG
The fishers have heard the Water SpriteF
Whose screams forebode that wreck is nighG
-
Last night the gifted Seer did viewD
A wet shroud swathed round ladye gayB
Then stay thee Fair in RavensheuchE
Why cross the gloomy firth to dayB
-
'Tis not because Lord Lindesay's heirH
To night at Roslin leads the ballI
But that my ladye mother thereH
Sits lonely in her castle hallI
-
'Tis not because the ring they rideJ
And Lindesay at the ring rides wellC
But that my sire the wine will chideJ
If 'tis not fill'd by RosabelleA
-
O'er Roslin all that dreary nightF
A wondrous blaze was seen to gleamK
'Twas broader than the watch fire's lightF
And redder than the bright moon beamK
-
It glar'd on Roslin's castled rockL
It ruddied all the copse wood glenM
'Twas seen from Dryden's groves of oakN
And seen from cavern'd Hawthorn denM
-
Seem'd all on fire that chapel proudO
Where Roslin's chiefs uncoffin'd lieG
Each Baron for a sable shroudO
Sheath'd in his iron panoplyP
-
Seem'd all on fire within aroundQ
Deep sacristy and altar's paleR
Shone every pillar foliage boundQ
And glimmer'd all the dead men's mailR
-
Blaz'd battlement and pinnet highG
Blaz'd every rose carved buttress fairH
So still they blaze when fate is nighG
The lordly line of high St ClairH
-
There are twenty of Roslin's barons boldS
Lie buried within that proud chapelleC
Each one the holy vault doth holdS
But the sea holds lovely RosabelleA
-
And each St Clair was buried thereH
With candle with book and with knellC
But the sea caves rung and the wild winds sungT
The dirge of lovely RosabelleA
