Soft spread the southern sumer nightA
Her veil of darksome blueB
Ten thousand stars combined to lightA
The terrace of Saint CloudC
-
The evening breezes gently sigh'dD
Like breath of lover trueB
Bewailing the deserted prideD
And wreck of sweet Saint CloudC
-
The drum's deep roll was heard afarE
The bugle wildly blewB
Good night to Hulan and HussarF
That garrison Saint CloudC
-
The startled Naiads from the shadeG
With broken urns withdrewB
And silenced was that proud cascadeG
The glory of Saint CloudC
-
We sate upon its steps of stoneH
Nor could its silence rueB
When waked to music of our ownH
The echoes of Saint CloudC
-
Slow Seine might hear each lovely noteI
Fall light as summer dewB
While through the moonless air they floatI
Prolong'd from fair Saint CloudC
-
And sure a melody more sweetJ
His waters never knewB
Though music's self was wont to meetJ
With Princes at Saint CloudC
-
Nor then with more delighted earK
The circle round her drewB
Than ours when gather'd round to hearK
Our songstress at Saint CloudC
-
Few happy hours poor mortals passL
Then give those hours their dueB
And rank among the foremost classL
Our evenings at Saint CloudC
