When I was young in dark AfricaA
I used to think it was folk tale thatB
The world was round andC
Rolled like the soccer ballsD
Our bare hardened feet kickedE
Who could have told me it was real whenF
All I saw was the cloudy horizonG
Marking the end of my world withH
Baroque mountain rangesI
Sagging clouds and a peeping sunG
-
The Almighty blessed me watered my groundJ
I grew up and His Angels took meK
To the other side of a world I only dreamt ofL
Escaping from the daily deathM
From the monotony of griefN
They died everyday before my teary eyesO
Brothers sisters cousins uncles all of themP
They said it was this curse AIDSQ
Torturous with a parching vengeanceR
Wantonly plucking away vernal rosesS
Leaving deep trails of sorrowful tearsT
-
My soul bleeds my heart mournsU
For the children of Africa orphaned ignoredV
Malnourished their dreams pitch blackW
I pray to the great God aboveL
To spare them the pain the tearsT
Just give them the blessing of hopeX
Listen to the harmonies of their soulsY
Moisten their chapped lipsZ
Just if you could love their emptying soulsY
-
They have dreams too big and small butA2
They don't matter no more indignant fantasiesB2
Their indefatigable talents die in their sleepC2
The songs in their souls furtive melodiesB2
Content with their tainted dis symmetryK
They are swallowed in the obvious perfidyK
Bottomless these gallant soldiersD2
Disarmed by fate paying for the sins of their fore sE2
Brave warriors drowning in suffuse povertyK
