Day in day out they turn their attentionA
To the outskirts of the city that never sleepsB
It is where they sow the seeds that never shootC
They the souls of the young and boldD
Lives nipped at the bud candlesE
Blown out at the young of the nightF
A story never to be toldD
-
Rows upon rows they stand outG
Like rows of corn in early summerH
They are crosses holy wooden and stoneI
But it matters not now because they mark just the endJ
A consternation of a generation with no hopeK
Of a resurrection in their trail an orphanageL
A hopeless epitaph to a land of promiseM
-
Let the selfish world forget noN
Turn the blind eye to the plight of my peopleO
Let them stuff their ears tight toP
The consecrated wail of the hungry black childQ
Who dies for no fault of hersR
She cries for mercy cry to a lesser godS
She gasps for her last breathT
In a world abundant with enoughU
A great world that reflects in our mirrorsR
-
Down in the hungry bowls of the earthV
In the gaping mouths of the greedy soilW
They let their tear springs blessX
Mothers grandmothers fathers and grand fathersR
They ask for the trillionth timeY
Is it you oh Lord who brought us this afflictionA
Did you make these germs we can t see toP
Deprive us of heirs to our heritageL
Cry loud Oh Africa cry great LionA
For when you die in your sleep you leave a silent worldZ
-
They congregate they worshipA2
These humble women of Africa bow to the God of loveB2
Their knees scaly their skin creasedZ
-
Their voices hoarse singing songs of kingsC2
For centuries they have sang the same old songsD2
On the slave ships on the toiling fields in the unmanned villagesE2
Is this the day of reckoning when questions they will askF2
Is this the right God that we have praisedZ
Are these the right songs we have sangG2
Sing Oh Africa sing sing to the end of your dayZ
-
They ran the Saxons the Portuguese the BoersH2
All clans of the same tribe even the jaded Jews from HitlerH
To Africa the free land a land of their discoveryI2
With them they brought syphilis typhoid anthrax influenzaJ2
To rid of the monkeys that wouldn t obligeK2
One by one we beat them now they got us squareL2
Run we can t Hide we dareL2
Journey to the fields of sorrow we never tireH
We lay them in the bowls of our fore bearer earthV
Like lambs to the hungry wolvesM2
Our future our love our hope we mourn and despairL2
-
We beg we pray Oh lord spare us the tearsN2
For they are full these fields of sorrowN
Every hole has been planted every seed awaits your tearsN2
We look up to you Oh greatnessM
To give shoot to the seedlings of hopeK
That you may stop our hopeless tearsN2
For the love you bestowed on our kindZ
This big heart your blessing to usM
The one that saw us through slaveryI2
Colonization and barbaric strife isO2
Always ready to forgive and forgetZ
That we planted our souls in the fields of sorrowN
