O Venus beauty of the skiesA
To whom a thousand temples riseA
Gaily false in gentle smilesB
Full of love perplexing wilesB
O goddess from my heart removeC
The wasting cares and pains of loveD
-
If ever thou hast kindly heardE
A song in soft distress preferredE
Propitious to my tuneful vowF
A gentle goddess hear me nowF
Descend thou bright immortal guestG
In all thy radiant charms confessedG
-
Thou once didst leave almighty JoveF
And all the golden roofs aboveF
The car thy wanton sparrows drewH
Hovering in air they lightly flewH
As to my bower they winged their wayI
I saw their quivering pinions playI
-
The birds dismissed while you remainJ
Bore back their empty car againK
Then you with looks divinely mildL
In every heavenly feature smiledL
And asked what new complaints I madeM
And why I called you to my aidM
-
What frenzy in my bosom ragedN
And by what cure to be assuagedN
What gentle youth I would allureO
Whom in my artful toils secureO
Who does thy tender heart subdueH
Tell me my Sappho tell me whoH
-
Though now he shuns thy longing armsP
He soon shall court thy slighted charmsP
Though now thy offerings he despiseA
He soon to thee shall sacrificeQ
Though now he freezes he soon shall burnR
And be thy victim in his turnR
-
Celestial visitant once moreS
Thy needful presence I imploreS
In pity come and ease my griefF
Bring my distempered soul reliefF
Favour thy suppliant's hidden firesT
And give me all my heart desiresT
