Friend of my early days we meet once moreA
Once more I stand thine aged boughs beneathB
And hear again the rustling music pourA
Along thy leaves as whispering spirits breatheC
-
Full many a day of sunshine and of stormD
Since last we parted both have surely knownE
Thy leaves are thinned decrepit is thy formD
And all my cherished visions they are flownE
-
How beautiful how brief those sunny hoursF
Departed now when life was in its springG
When Fancy knew no scene undecked with flowersF
And Expectation flew on Fancy's wingG
-
Here on the bank beside this whispering streamH
Which still runs by as gayly as of yoreA
Marking its eddies I was wont to dreamH
Of things away on some far fairy shoreA
-
Then every whirling leaf and bubbling ballI
That floated by was full of radiant thoughtJ
Each linked with love had music at its callI
And thrilling echoes o'er my bosom broughtJ
-
The bird that sang within this gnarled oakK
The waves that dallied with its leafy shadeL
The mellow murmurs from its boughs that brokeK
Their joyous tribute to my spirit paidL
-
No phantom rose to tell of future illM
No grisly warning marr'd my prophet dreamsN
My heart translucent as the leaping rillM
My thoughts all free and flashing at its beamsN
-
Here is the grassy knoll I used to seekO
At summer noon beneath the spreading shadeL
And watch the flowers that stooped with glowing cheekO
To meet the romping ripples as they playedL
-
Here is the spot which memory's magic glassP
Hath often brought arrayed in fadeless greenQ
Making this oak this brook this waving grassP
A simple group fond Nature's fairest sceneQ
-
And as I roamed beside the Rhone or RhineR
Or other favored stream in after daysS
With jealous love this rivulet would shineR
Full on my heart and claim accustomed praiseS
-
And oh how oft by sorrow overborneR
By care oppressed or bitter malice wrungT
By friends betrayed or disappointment tornR
My weary heart all sickened and unstrungT
-
Hath yearned to leave the bootless strife afarU
And find beneath this oak a quiet graveV
Where the rough echo of the world's loud jarU
Yields to the music of the mellow waveV
-
And now again I stand this stream besideW
Again I hear the silver ripples flowX
I mark the whispers murmuring o'er the tideW
And the light bubbles trembling as they goX
-
But oh the magic spell that lingered hereY
In boyhood's golden age my heart to blessZ
With the bright waves that rippled then so clearA2
Is lost in ocean's dull forgetfulnessZ
-
Gone are the visions of that glorious timeB2
Gone are the glancing birds I loved so wellC2
Nor will they wake again their silver chimeB2
From the deep tomb of night in which they dwellC2
-
And if perchance some fleeting memories stealD2
Like far off echoes to my dreaming earY
Away ungrasped the cheating visions wheelD2
As spectres start upon the wing of fearA2
-
Alas the glorious sun which then was highE2
Touching each common thing with rosy lightF2
Is darkly banished from the lowering skyE2
And life's dull onward pathway lies in nightF2
-
Yes I am changed and this gray gnarled formD
Its leaves all scattered by the rending blastG2
Is but an image of my heart the stormD
The storm of life doth make us such at lastG2
-
Farewell old oak I leave thee to the windH2
And go to struggle with the chafing tideW
Soon to the dust thy form shall be resignedH2
And I would sleep thy crumbling limbs besideW
-
Thy memory will pass thy sheltering shadeL
Will weave no more its tissue o'er the sodI2
And all thy leaves ungathered in the gladeL
Shall by the reckless hoof of time be trodI2
-
My cherished hopes like shadows and like leavesZ
Name fame and fortune each shall pass awayJ2
And all that castle building fancy weavesZ
Shall sleep unthinking as the drowsy clayJ2
-
But from thy root another tree shall bloomK2
With living leaves its tossing boughs shall riseZ
And the winged spirit bursting from the tombK2
Oh shall it spring to light beyond these skiesZ
