The Two Windmills Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCBBDD EEFFGGHHII BBHH JJKKLL AAMM NNCCFFTwo neighbors living on a hill | A |
Had each and side by side a mill | A |
The one was Jones a thrifty wight | B |
Whose mill in every wind went right | B |
The storm and tempest vainly spent | C |
Their rage upon it round it went | C |
E'en when the summer breeze was light | B |
The whirling wings performed their flight | B |
And hence a village saying rose | D |
As sure as Jones's mill it goes | D |
- | |
Not so with neighbor Smith's close by | E |
Full half the time it would not ply | E |
Save only when the wind was west | F |
Still as a post it stood at rest | F |
By every tempest it was battered | G |
By every thundergust 'twas shattered | G |
Through many a rent the rain did filter | H |
And fair or foul 'twas out of kilter | H |
And thus the saying came at last | I |
Smith's mill is made for folks that fast | I |
- | |
Now who can read this riddle right | B |
Two mills are standing on a height | B |
One whirling brisk whate'er the weather | H |
The other idle weeks together | H |
- | |
Come gentle reader lend thine ear | J |
And thou the simple truth shalt hear | J |
And mark for here the moral lurks | K |
Smith held to faith but not to works | K |
While Jones believed in both and so | L |
By faith and practice made it go | L |
- | |
Smith prayed and straight sent in his bill | A |
Expecting Heaven to tend his mill | A |
And grumbled sore whene'er he found | M |
That wheels ungreased would not go round | M |
- | |
Not so with Jones for though as prayerful | N |
To grease his wheels he e'er was careful | N |
And healed with ready stitch each rent | C |
That ruthless time or tempest sent | C |
And thus by works his faith expressed | F |
Good neighbor Jones by Heaven was blessed | F |
